“The Real World” 411
by John Wenzel on June 6, 2006

Everything about “The Real World” in Denver is under tight wraps until the show airs. MTV (and most networks) are highly protective of any info leaks about their shows before they hit your TV. Besides, why spoil all the secrets of a teen-targeted, softcore porn soap opera before you have to? Still, there are a few things we know (and this list will only grow):

– The cast is multiracial and consists of four men and three women. They will film in Denver for about 15 weeks before wrapping up production. Word is they’ll be working at Outward Bound, although we’re still working to confirm that.

– They live at 1920 Market St. in the heart of LoDo, at the former B-52 Billiards. The site was extensively renovated months before the cast’s late May move-in date. Additions included a full kitchen, a hot tub and the now-requisite basketball court. Presumably the his-and-hers bathrooms include all manner of garish, neon backlit furnishings and fish bowls full of condoms and lotion. MTV offered to give us a tour of the place, but only if we didn’t write about it until the show aired. Heh… right.

– Insiders say the production facilities are located in the basement, the bedrooms are on the ground floor, and the hot tub is at the front of the building behind sliding doors that face north. Keep your eyes peeled for some late night bathing suit moments…

Heritage Bank, which assumed the deed to 1920 Market St. from the former owners of B-52 Billiards in lieu of foreclosure, sold it to the show’s production company on March 8, 2006 for $2.7 million. The 21,927 square-foot space will likely be sold again after the show finished. It still has a liquor license, which Rock Island’s David Clamage is “babysitting? so it’ll be there when it’s time to sell.

– One to two uniformed, off-duty cops can often be seen trailing the cast and crew for security. When we tried to take pictures of them at the Martini Ranch on June 8, one of the crew had the cop come over and request that we stop taking them, despite the fact that we were on public property. We’ll post those pics soon.

According to Det. John White at the Denver Police Department: “There actually isn’t a specific ordinance that speaks to photographs being taken of people that have indicated that they don’t want their picture taken. It could rise to the level of what could be considered a disturbance on a state or city level. But to my knowlddge there’s no specific ordinance that speaks directly to that. There’s no expectation of privacy in a public place.” In other words, it’s against the law for anyone (especially MTV staffers) to touch or threaten to touch you for taking pictures of “The Real World” cast.

– The cast and crew have already been spotted (and heckled, and kicked out) all over town as they carouse at bars, restaurants and on the street. Sometimes traveling in a white mega-stretch limo (but never cabs), they’ve hit places like Lodo’s Bar and Grill (essentially next door to their house), Brix in Cherry Creek (where they partied with about 25 kids), the Monarck, Tabu, Table 6, Coyote Ugly, The Pourhouse Pub, Two Fisted Mario’s, Evolution and Hush. One of their favorite spots is The Tavern Downtown, (formerly the Soiled Dove, across the street from their house). There are rumors that MTV paid the bar to let the iron-livered cast drink free during their stay, and that they’ve already been kicked out of the place. Tavern general manager Mark Stewart refuted those claims (see comments below).

Lodos

– The cast members have wasted no time generating bad karma around the city. At Brix, the four girls ran up more than $100 bill then only left $3 (for both the tab and the tip). This led Brix owner and host Charles Master to tell The Post’s gossip columnist Bill Husted, “I don’t need people like that in my place, even if they are good-looking.”

– Several activities are planned for the cast while they’re in town, including some dodgeball games via the Denver Athletic Club. Apparently the lovable hipsters at the Denver Kickball Coalition also challenged the cast to a game and they’re considering taking them up on it. If they play it’ll be a midnight match at the field at Sonny Lawson Park, 2300 Welton St., on June 14. You can bet there’ll be a pretty hefty crowd there to watch (update — they never showed up).

– Not everyone is embracing “The Real World” in Denver. Several bars (including the storied El Chapultepec, right down the street from their house, and the hipster haven The Larimer Lounge) initially said they will refuse, or have already refused, to sign release forms allowing any filming there. Apparently they feel the inconvenience caused to customers, and the general milieu caused by a rowdy cast and crew, might be too soul-crushing for them.

– A launch party is planned for Friday, June 9 at Club Vinyl. A look at the show’s seemingly official Myspace profile reveals that it will include a reunion of members from past shows, including Jose from Key West, Johanna from Austin, Cameran from San Diego, Teck from Hawaii and Ace from Paris. It’s also likely some of the current cast members will be there boozing it up on the rooftop deck. VIP meet-and-greet passes are going for around $50, and general entry is $15. The reunion cast appeared on Mania TV in Denver today (June 9) to publicize the appearance.

trishelle

What, no Trishelle from Las Vegas? Dang, we wanted to see her pretend like she didn’t want to sleep with everybody within humping distance…

– There’s another rumor going around that they’re visiting Leadville and Glenwood Springs this weekend (June 9-11). If anyone up there sees them or know what they’re up to let us know!

  1. What I want to know is how exactly is your information. I am seriously considering to Sonny Lawson Park on the 14th but I don’t want it to be a waste of my time making the venture. So all I really want to know is how reliable your information is, that you (denver post) will vouche for that event to take place. If you would e-mail me back it would be appreciated. Thank you.

  2. Marc Hughes, head of the Denver Kickball Coalition, doesn’t even know for sure yet, but as soon as we confirm it we’ll let you know.

  3. I am so pissed that they are filming here. This is just going to make the people of Colorado look like stupid drunken fools. I think it will be interesting if these idiots do something positive for the community like attending cultural events. Besides bars there is the Taste of Colorado, the Juneteenth Fest, The Dragon Boat fest, and so many other things that they could do in addition to looking like drunks and sex addicts on national televison!

  4. As G.M of The Tavern Downtown, Let’s clear something up; We were not given any money or preferred treatment by MTV. The cast pays for their drinks like anyone else when they stop in, and no, they have not been asked to leave, ever. The whole thing does make for good gossip, though…

  5. Will I have the option of hiring mountaineering instructors with real mountaineering experience or do I have to go with the MTV people?
