Job at J.R.’s
by John Wenzel on June 14, 2006

Larry McDonald, manager/bartender at J.R.’s Bar and Grill confirmed that one of the gay “Real World” Denver cast members will be interviewing for a job there tomorrow, June 15. The job was rumored for weeks as local gossip columnists and members of the gay community speculated about (or perhaps girded for) the arrival of the reality TV maelstrom.

– As one of Denver’s most popular gay bars, not to mention a centrally-located hotspot in the growing area around 17th and Clarkson, J.R.’s would seem a logical choice for a gay cast member. The blonde-haired “Jeremy” (not his real name, just the one he would be going by at J.R.’s, according to McDonald) is doing all this outside of MTV, Bunim/Murray Productions and the rest of the cast. McDonald said MTV is still deciding what official jobs the Denver cast will have in town (update — it’s with Outward Bound). And as far as he knows, MTV will not being taping this cast member on the job, but that won’t stop them from coming into the bar…

McDonald went on to say: “We talked to (an MTV) producer about it last week. The cast and crew can come in anytime they want. I actually don’t even know what the schedule is for him yet. We only talked on the phone once, so they had to find out what his other job was going to be first. When he works it’ll be at least four shifts a week. The only night we won’t have him scheduled is Thursday, because it’s way too busy in this bar with 50 cent drafts and all that.”

– McDonald, who was contacted though a friend to set the job up, had to sign all the usual documents allowing MTV the use of J.R.’s logo and shots of its interior and exterior. Any patrons appearing on camera when MTV films in the bar will have to sign release forms. Still, McDonald - a fan of the show since the San Diego season - is excited about the attention it’s brought to his bar and the city in general. “I think it’s great for Denver,” he said. “And just the buzz for everything that’s been said (about J.R.’s) so far has brought a lot of publicity to us.”

– The interview will merely be a formality, as the cast member already has some bartending experience in his prior life, wherever that was (McDonald didn’t know). “There’s a chance of him not being qualified,” McDonald said. “We wouldn’t hire just anybody.” Maybe not, but out of any body, this body is going to attract a lot of warm bodies to the bar.
