“The Real World” Denver crew

– Most of our posts so far have focused on the doings of “The Real World” Denver cast, which obviously elicits a lot of reader interest. But what about the true behind-the-scenes players: the production crew? A few Get Real Denver readers have pointed us toward some Myspace photos of “The Real World” Denver crew, which consists of various camera, lighting and sound people, plus production assistants, private security guards and the occasional producer. As mentioned in various places on this blog, some of them are locals and all of them skew pretty young

– Certainly, the tenacity with which they’ve repelled various Denver Post reporters and photographers (as well as photo-taking members of the general public) has earned them a bit of our respect, even if they like to bark baseless legal threats at us. They probably have a bright future in Hollywood.

– Checking out the Myspace profiles of some of these people (Adam, Lauren, Jason, Ken, Brendan and Andrea) would seem to indicate they’re all involved with the show. How do we know for sure? Well, one of the telltale signs is they’re all friends with each other on Myspace (Note: their profiles have since been made private so we’ve removed the links). Another is the distinctive garb they’re all wearing in their photos (the tech belts full of wireless communication devices). Most importantly, I recognize many of them from the times I’ve seen them around town.

– Cameraman Jason, in particular, is distinctive with his stylin’ afro, which apparently protected him from some flying glass when the cast and crew were attacked recently at J.R.’s Bar and Grill (read about it here).

– Go to our Moblog/Photo Gallery for even more pics, and keep those tips coming…

  1. Wouldn’t you think that since they work on shows like this that they might be friends from OTHER shows and not apart of Real World.

  2. Is it a violation of copyright to link to the crewmembers’ pages, or post pictures you took from their myspace pages? I only ask because I’m not sure.

  3. I conducted a bit more research out of my curiousity, and found this in the myspace.com Terms of Use page:

Illegal and/or unauthorized use of the MySpace Services, including collecting usernames and/or email addresses of Members by electronic or other means for the purpose of sending unsolicited email or unauthorized framing of or linking to the MySpace Website is prohibited.

    and furthermore:

MySpace.com does not claim any ownership rights in the text, files, images, photos, video, sounds, musical works, works of authorship, or any other materials (collectively, “Content”) that you post to the MySpace Services. After posting your Content to the MySpace Services, you continue to retain all ownership rights in such Content,

  4. Anonymous: Since all these crew members made their Myspace profiles private immediately after I posted yesterday, I’m fairly certain I’m right. They also changed their Myspace names to charming things like “Get Ethics, Wenzel.” I’m guessing a non-crew member wouldn’t care enough to do that.

  5. CuriousGeorge — Nope, using these photos is fine. As I’ve said before, we don’t claim ownership to them, we say where all of them are from (Myspace — the most public of websites) and we’re reporting on a legitimate news story, i.e. a TV show filming in town for the summer. Plus, these crew members have no problem asking private citizens to get out of their way on public property… don’t you think it’s OK for us to tell people who they are?

  6. I appreciate the expose of the behind the scenes of the ‘Real World’ operation - but it’s nothing like we haven’t seen in the various “Real World You Never Saw” videos. I feel that it’s great that you are so diligent in covering all aspects of this Real World season but just a thought…the cast signed up for this and have agreed to be shown on TV…the crew did not, they are simply doing their jobs - to expose them like this on the website seems unreasonably mean - are you just doing this because you have been stopped a couple times by the crew from taking pictures of the cast?? Is it just me, or does it seem spiteful and violating?

    Comment by Chris — July 11, 2006 @ 2:03 pm

  7. Chris — if it seems that way I didn’t mean it to. As I said, we’re just reporting on a news story of public interest. I don’t think showing these crew members is spiteful or violating, and it’s not any kind of retribution for getting stopped by them. I have nothing personal against any of these people. I know they’re just doing their jobs.

But as I’ve said before, if the crew is allowed to walk around town and displace people wherever they go, we should be allowed to show who they are. Let’s be honest — this isn’t a documentary they’re making here, it’s an improv soap opera. The crew may not be the ones on camera, but they’re all part of a massive TV production, and the point of the blog is to go behind the scenes of it. We’re not making anything up about these people or attacking them, just putting their photos (which were on Myspace for anyone in the world to see yesterday) on a website.

  8. Thanks for the response John. Judging by the fact that all their myspace pages are blocked now, it’s obvious that the crew of Real World reads your website as well. I wonder how they feel about you posting their pictures? As a previous post noted - some of these people could be working on other reality shows - if that’s true, would it be wrong to post their photos on the site (if in fact that they’re not working on ‘Real World’)? Just a question…

    Comment by Chris — July 11, 2006 @ 2:38 pm

  9. I find it interesting that people are objecting to these photos. I could care less if there are up or not. But it is not like they are posting anything that is private. Mypace is a social networking site and millions of people can view photos you put up of yourselves. Those people obviously didn’t care before about having those photos out there and to be seen. I agree with the comment above about the crew not signing up for this. But if the crew has photos out there for millions to see why not show them. How do you violate people who purposely put photos on a public website to be seen by millions around the world. Just like these photos and videos everybody posts on each others pages, do you think they got permission from those people or downloaded it from another site.

If you deliberately share your personal information online, what expectation of privacy do expect to have?

This will just help us find the cast so that we can see them. Now everytime I go down to the bars I have other people to help me spot the cast.

    Comment by Daven — July 11, 2006 @ 2:39 pm

  10. Chris — of course if we found out that some of these photos weren’t of “The Real World” crew we’d take them down immediately. We don’t want to present any misinformation or single out people that have nothing to do with the show. It’s just that we’re pretty certain these are Denver “Real World” crew members and not those of another reality show.

And yeah, it’s obvious that at least one person with “The Real World” reads this site constantly, since all the Myspace profiles we’ve found were made private instantly after we posted about them.

    Comment by John Wenzel — July 11, 2006 @ 3:04 pm

  11. Daven - I see your point and I agree that posting on myspace is basically putting it out there in the open. I certainly agree with you on the bulk of your post - the only thing that bothered me is the last paragraph where you feel that we can use this new info to find the cast. I have no problems taking pics or trying to find the cast but to use the crew members (which we now have seens pics of) to track down the cast is quite unnecessary. The cast is usually at Lodo’s or Monarck anyways.

  12. I was a fan of this site until now. It is great to see pics of the house, read backgrounds of the cast, and find out where they are hanging out. But now you’re posting pics and websites of the crew? Wow! “Note: their profiles have since been made private and some of their names changed” That is depressing. If they wanted to be in front of the camera they would have signed up for the show. Sure they posted their pics on MySpace, so it’s legal. But that doesn’t make it right. If you waited on the curb taking pics of an office complex, and then followed around after a lawyer that worked there, taking his pics and posting them, I pretty sure he would consider that stalking. They are trying to work, and more importantly, live. Is this really journalism?

    Comment by Toby Beahan — July 11, 2006 @ 3:52 pm

  13. Toby — Sorry you feel that way, but as I’ve said, this site is not an exercise in hard news. This is a behind-the-scenes gossip blog, and a tongue-in-cheek one at that. See my previous posts for why we feel it’s OK to put these crew photos on here.

Secondly, I have no doubt a lawyer would consider someone following him around all day stalking. The difference? That lawyer is not on a national TV show getting drunk every night in front of cameras and making everyone that talks to him sign a waiver.

    Comment by John Wenzel — July 11, 2006 @ 3:57 pm

  14. I must back up Toby here - the crew of ‘Real World’ is NOT on national TV getting drunk every night…so show the pics of the cast members but the crew is not the ones that signed up to be stalked.

    Comment by Chris — July 11, 2006 @ 4:21 pm

  15. John Wenzel wrote…”That lawyer is not on a national TV show getting drunk every night in front of cameras and making everyone that talks to him sign a waiver.”

I believe that Toby was speaking of the crew who are not getting drunk in front of the cameras.

    Comment by Sarah — July 11, 2006 @ 4:27 pm

  16. Chris — Yes, but the crew are out in public constantly. According to dozens of comments and tips from readers (and my own experiences with them), they displace residents and intimidate them into not being too near the cast, or taking pictures, or even lingering on the sidewalk while they’re shooting, which is perfectly legal.

And Sarah, you’re absolutely right, the crew are not out there getting drunk in public every night. Sorry, my comment could have been worded more clearly. The point is, these people are part of a TV show with intense public interest. It’d be naive of them to think they wouldn’t end up in the public eye at some point, or on the other side of the camera.

    Comment by John Wenzel — July 11, 2006 @ 4:32 pm

  17. I was just reading through all the post and have we forgotten that an executive producer started a photo war just for taking photos in public. Who knows what that guy intends on doing with those photos. They obviously don’t care enough about your public rights, which by the way are none when in public.

Chris - I was not saying that I will stalk the crew, only that if I see them with gear on I know the cast is around.

    Comment by Daven — July 11, 2006 @ 4:44 pm

  18. Daven-I think it’s pretty clear when you see a camera filming someone on the street that the cast is around. How does it help to see pictures of crew hanging out with their friends or family? Just because someone has a public myspace profile doesn’t mean that they were interested in public exposure in another venue. How is it “behind the scenes gossip” to see someone’s personal taste in music or silly in-jokes from friends? That has nothing to do with the cast and, seems to me, is not at all in the spirit of this site. The crew is there to film the cast, so it seems to me that it is their job to tell people not to interfere with filming.

    Comment by D. — July 11, 2006 @ 6:09 pm

  19. John - I get your point, somewhat…you said, “It’d be naive of them to think they wouldn’t end up in the public eye at some point, or on the other side of the camera” - you really think so? I think it’s perfectly fair for you to post the pics of the crew filming the cast - nice pics, by the way - but to post their personal pics just still seem wrong to me, like the one with just the three crew members hanging out without any camera gear on…

Daven - Understood, I thought you meant that now you can stalk the crew…we all know that when we see people with camera gear that Real World cast must be somewhere near by.

    Comment by Chris — July 11, 2006 @ 7:05 pm

  20. John- Although myspace is public, have you ever thought this was a way for the crew members who have to leave their friends and families for months at a time to keep in touch? Although legal, it just is not fair to have their pictures and those close to them put on public display on a website that they did not choose to be on. They are working a job, just trying to get paid. Quit making their lives a living hell!!!

    Comment by Rebecca — July 11, 2006 @ 9:18 pm

  21. How am I making their lives hell? I’m not advocating that anything happen against them and I’m not saying anything negative about them, just putting their pics online and reporting what happens when people see them around town.

    Comment by John Wenzel — July 12, 2006 @ 8:08 am

  22. FYI, SOME of the crew is local. MOST are from out of town. They are usually forced to sign an NDA which scares the bejezus out of them. The networks instill fear into these young kids about disclosing information, so they are probably afraid to get in trouble and act rude to prove their loyalty. Believe me, they probably could care less about the cast, to them, it’s just another job. And, MTV doesn’t pay that gr8t.

    Comment by friendlyfoeguy — July 12, 2006 @ 10:11 am

  23. Yes, I’m sure that these crewmembers posted their profiles showing themselves (and somewhat bragging) of their status of crewmembers for the Real World are obviously trying to take extensive measures to keep themselves out of the public-eye. Especially since Myspace.com is such a small and insignificant social-website as of lately.

I’m sure these cast-members are incredibly embarassed of their affiliation with the Real World and want no one to know that they work for MTV. Their Myspace accounts were just mistakenly placed in the public venue. I hear that fact alone can get zero numbers at a bar and even less points on the popularity poll.

    Comment by clark — July 12, 2006 @ 11:50 am

  24. Once again, they are mostlt from out of town, bragging or not. And, yes MTV seems so very cool, until you’ve worked for them. BTW, it’s Bunim/Murray a facet of MTV. They pay crap rates, they promote newbie PAs (by that I mean less experienced) crew people to high positions rapidly so many of them haven’t a clue what they’re doing. NOT a fun group to work for, but people do it bc it looks good on paper and because they’re beginners.

    Comment by friendlyfoeguy — July 12, 2006 @ 1:59 pm

  25. I’ll submit that no-one is forcing these people to work where they do. There’s certain facets that come with all jobs and it’s a personal choice to take them. So, if I’m to feel bad that a crew on a popular Reality TV Show is getting some press from a paper covering them filming in their city, I’m a bit lost for reasons.

If I accept a job that sucks and keep working there, I’m either putting up with it for the money, resume or any number of other reasons that somehow out-weighs the negatives. Add the fact I’m posting “Hey look where I work” journals on Myspace and there’s probably a hint at why they “face such hardships” every day.

    Comment by clark — July 13, 2006 @ 8:46 am

  26. True. I’ll accept that. I mostlty wanted to point out that although there are some locals on crew, it’s mostly staffed by pretentious out of towners that think they’re cool to be working for MTV. (Thus their myspace accounts) Many locals (not ALL) wouldn’t touch those jobs with a 10 foot pole. Especially the experienced ones.

    Comment by friendlyfoeguy — July 13, 2006 @ 10:16 am

  27. I cannot believe that the real world is being shot in denver. WTF. Why don’t they come to some real cities. Like Detroit, Atlanta, D.C., or Baltimore. I mean who and what lives in denver colorado? Some horse? MTV really dissapointed me with this crap. Anyway peace

    Comment by Slick — October 25, 2006 @ 5:22 pm

  28. I wish The Real World would come to Wisconsin. I’ve never seeing them in Wisconsin in all 18 episodes. The guy’s are really Hot on the Real world but especially the girl’s.
