Tear down that wall!

The wall that divides us
The wall that divides us from “The Real World,” or their courtyard anyway.

CBS4 Denver reported on its 10 o’clock news last night that “The Real World” Denver producers have been ordered to appear before our city’s Lower Downtown Design Review Board next Thursday, Aug. 3 to explain their apparent illegal construction of a brick wall in their courtyard at 1920 Market St.

– The wall was added when they revamped B-52’s Billiards old courtyard, where drinkers and smokers used to gather (and still do, actually). It hides a basketball court, hot tub and general lounging area (see our previous post about it here).

– You can read Channel 4’s entire report right here. According to CBS4, blueprints showed “other renovations inside the building. A shuffleboard area was added along with a chat area, an office, gym, bedrooms, a basketball court, small pool, phone room and large areas for television production.”

– That last bit is likely in reference to their basement production area, which sources close to the show have told us looks like a control room at NASA. Any anyway, shuffleboard? What are they on Medicaid or something?

blueprints
A still from the CBS4 broadcast shows blueprints of “The Real World” Denver house.

9News reporter Kirk Montgomery also aired this report at 4 p.m. today. Apparently the board can either admonish “The Real World,” ask them to make modifications to the wall or have them take it down entirely.

– How weird would that be? It would probably foul up the carefully-arranged season, as it’s important for the surroundings to look the same all the time so the editors can jump back and forth to cobble together plotlines. Do you think will this will make it onto the show? It’s part of the real world, yes? (We’re betting it won’t).

– For the record, “The Real World” producers were cooperative when contacted about the wall and are expected to appear before the LoDo board without protest. We called investigative reporter Brian Maass, who broke the story, to get a few more details.

“I think there’s more there but we didn’t spend that much time on it. My understanding is that they’re going to send an architect over there (to the hearing),” Maass said over the phone today. “Ann (the architect) has already submitted a packet to the city.”

– Certainly, Maass is familiar to “The Real World” crew: “People closely connected to the situation have told me that MTV was really furious that I first broke the story that they were coming to Denver, 24 hours before they announced it.”

– We also dug up this document, an agenda for the LoDo Design board’s Aug. 3 meeting. Looks like applicant Ken Chien, property owner Jonathan Murray (a founding producer of “The Real World”) and architect Ann Cuthbertson will have their hearing at 7:45 a.m., although it’s doubtful all will be required to show up for the hearing (we get the sense it’s just going to be Ann).

– The hearing is open to the public and will be held at The Northern Trust Bank Community Room (at 1400 16th Street Mall).

  3. Let it go people!!! Seriously…Who really gives a sh** that they built a wall inside??? The media in Denver is taking this as an opportunity to flex their muscles, when in turn keeping this damn place a cow town.

  4. I hope people DONT pay $25 to meet the cast at Vinyl. That’s ridiculous. You could go out just about any night of the week and finmd them for free. In fact, they were at Vinyl for “free” on Friday.
