“The Real World” Tokyo?

A possible Tokyo backdrop for upcoming “Real World” seasons.

– So the blog’s been kinda quiet since the cast went to Thailand for its overseas trip, which has forced us to resort to such drastic measures as interviewing former cast members, name-dropping upcoming parties and other vaguely reality TV-ish stuff. But here’s a couple of minor “Real World”-related items…

– Our sources close to the show have confirmed the cast will return to Denver late on Aug. 23. That means that Aug. 24-Aug. 30 will be the last few days the cast is in town before splitting, and everyone’s last chance to catch them out and about (if you’re into that kind of thing) and, you know, take lots of pictures of them being drunk and humping each other in nightclub bathrooms.

– We’ve also been trolling the web more than usual, finding a few things here and there. A Variety.com story from a few months back confirmed that “The Real World” was renewed by MTV through 2008. That’s good news for producers Bunim/Murray Productions, which has seen ratings for the 14-year-old show fluctuate in recent months. That also means at least 20 seasons of the show will eventually air before it’s all said and done. 20 seasons, people… Where the hell can it go from here? Freaking Toronto?

– A recent post from a reader had this to say about upcoming “Real World” locales: “The reason why (there’s) no ‘Real World’ D.C. is because the year the were going to film it was one year to the day of the war on Iraq, plus they don’t have enough support from Bush yet to do one so until then it looks like season 19-20 will be Tokyo and Atlanta/Phoenix respectively.”

– Obviously there’s no way to verify this comment (why would Bush care about a TV show?) since MTV won’t even talk to us , but really, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. There are so few fresh cities the show could visit these days, and they have looked overseas in the past. I’m just sayin’.

– A press release on a techie website also had this note about the equipment the crew uses (part of a larger piece about Bunim/Murray’s “One Ocean View”): “We… just committed to shooting the 18th season of The Real World (Denver) using the SDX900, and everyone was thrilled with the initial footage coming back from the shoot,” said Mark Raudonis, Bunim-Murray’s vice president of post-production, in the press release. “The 16×9 ratio combined with 24p delivered a more cinematic quality that felt right for the One Ocean View project.”

– For those that don’t still live with their mother and play too much Warcraft, that means “The Real World” Denver is shooting their season entirely on next-gen digital cameras, which eliminates the need for pesky things like tape. The Panasonic AJ-SDX900 DVCPRO Cinema Camcorders “enabled our operators to hold a higher dynamic range in their shots than we were used to seeing from other cameras,” said Raudonis. “Specifically, the white areas of the frame seemed to hold on to more detail, looking natural rather than blown out.”

– Although Raudonis is talking in particular about the “One Ocean Beach” show, the unpredictable light and weather in the mountain environments of Colorado (where “The Real World” Denver cast have been working as guides for Outward Bound) likely provided technical challenges to the crew as well, making the cameras quite valuable.

  1. what a f***in idiot! the real world would never go to Tokyo.. It’s a nice city, but why the hell would they send a cast of all american assholes to a city where everyone is japanese??? Thats the dumbest assumption i’ve ever heard, and who ever thought that should be shot 9 times in the chest

  2. Adam — It may sound weird, but they’ve sent the cast to Paris and London before, and they’re quickly running out of cities to film in. I’m not saying it’s definitely going to happen, just that I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

As for being shot nine times in the chest… dude, get back on your meds!

  3. They’ve been to Key West….only 30,000 people. There are tons of other medium sized cities bigger than Austin that they should go to….not to mention that Atlanta, Cleveland, Houston, Dallas, Tampa are pretty large cities.

I can see drunken Americans in a city soo huge full of smart Japanese people trying to read their language, that would be rather humorous.

  4. I think the “real world” needs to realize these cast members are no longer “real”. They should just go to a college town like gainesville and cast the drunkest people at the bars. Then you will see some funny stuff. “Real World” come to UF and I guarantee you will finally get some good footage.

  5. Season 19 is either heading to Atlanta or Pittsburgh and season 20 is going Back to New York. Every 10 seasons are going to New York, or so that was the impression I was under. Season 19 will begin filming early 2007 – May/June 2007.

  8. What’s so wrong with filming in Tokyo? I live just outside Tokyo and it’s awesome. I’ve lived here for over 2 years now and for the people that think Japanese people only speak Japanese, you’re all wrong. Sure, there are some “old fashioned” people who do, but for the most part, many people do know English. On top of that, there aren’t only Japanese people that live here, obviously. In fact, there is a suprising amount of Americans, Europeans, and South Americans. The cities are awesome and the people are extremely nice. There is a TON to do here as well. Anyone who has been here would know about the extreme party scene in Roppongi.(we all know how the Real World people like to party) Look Roppongi up if you don’t know anything about it…it’s insane! I personally believe a Real World season would do great in the “Fashion Capital of the World”.

  9. It’s funny how this real world is near Boulder, Colorado and they’re going to Thailand….does anyone else see a relationship between this real world and the JonBonet Ramsey case, lol!

  10. D.C. will never happen, I have lived in the DC area for over 20 years, too many places won’t allow cameras.

  11. Tony: I was just thinking about that, LOL.

The Real World is running out of cities, MTV: Stop doing RW seasons in the US, ya ran out of good places to do it in. Tokyo would be an awesome place for The Real World.

  12. It’s too bad there’s no Real World: D.C. I lived there for three months with a bunch of college kids and we all had a crazy, memorable, amazing time!!!
