– Former Denver Post reporter and GetRealDenver.com contributor Scott Lieber watched last night’s premiere of “The Real World: Denver” and checked in with this report:

I have two main hopes for the rest of this “Real World” season. The first is that they continue to explore the tension between Davis and Stephen over Davis’ homosexuality. And the second is that the show shamelessly pours on the melodrama — a seed it has already planted…

Let’s be clear. In my experience, there are two kinds of “Real World” viewers: Those who watch the show purely for the voyeuristic pleasure of following the rise and fall of others’ relationships. And those who watch the show to see how America’s young adults view today’s issues. (I, like most viewers, am a combination of both.)

Let’s backpedal a moment. If you missed the first show, here are your seven new best friends, with a defining quote:

Alex
, 21, “I just love making out. It’s my thing.

Colie, 22, “Alex has a big penis.

Jenn, 22, “I want to get lips (tattooed) on my ass.

Tyrie, 23, “I’m a goofy guy.

Brooke, 24, (While making out with Jenn) “I don’t give a crap what other people think. I’m just gonna do this.

Stephen, 22, “I think it’s wrong that you’re gay.

Davis, 22, “I’m an outcast from my church because I’m gay.

The first episode starts like most: We meet the characters before they meet each other. They hug and scream when they see each other. The guys mention how attractive the female roommates are. They gawk at their new house. And they go out drinking.

Two intriguing storylines dominated the first show. The first came when Davis came out of the closet to his roommates — including his conservative, anti-gay roommate Stephen. — at The Tavern on Market Street. Later, Stephen tells Davis he thinks “it’s wrong that you’re gay, to which Davis responds, “What if I said I thought it was wrong you were black?

The two housemates — who chose to share a room together before Davis came out—seem to agree to tolerate each other as much as possible, and the episode retires that storyline.

But the latter conflict seems more likely to dominate the season. Colie confesses to her roommates she finds Alex attractive, and she makes out with him the first night. The following night, after the roommates go out and drink, Colie tells Alex she wants to have another “sleep over, but the episode closes as Alex sleeps with Jenn instead.

Oops.

Other side drama takes place. Brooke and Jenn make out in the hot tub. Colie, Jenn and Alex have a three-way kiss while they’re out drinking. And Tyrie tells Brooke that she’s beautiful. All indulging our appetite for drama.

But to please its audience in full, MTV must explore its two main storylines with vigor. If the trailers are any indication, it looks promising. Already we see Colie crying after hearing that Jenn and Alex had sex. (She’s known him one day!) We see Tyrie screaming at Davis for … something. And we see Jenn yelling at Stephen about his prejudiced views.

In other words, exactly the kind of crap we crave.

One quick afterthought. Make sure to check out the after show on MTV.com, which features an interview with Brooke about the first episode. At one point, someone asks Brooke a question about whether she thought Denver was a boring city, and Brooke has positive things to say. She also espouses on her roommates and what she thought going into the experience. (These after show shows are taking place after each episode.)

  1. I also liked Davis’ comment about ‘God faxing down’ that homosexuality is a sin.
