Red carpet at 1920 Market St.?

Red carpet house 1

– An eagle-eyed reader spotted a marked-off street, valets and a red carpet extended in front of “The Real World: Denver” house on Saturday. The above picture, from our 24-hour webcam, shows the valets milling about 1920 Market St. with hands in pockets.

So my question: What was going on there? The house recently sold for $3.3 million to become an upscale restaurant (read about it here), so perhaps the new owners were holding a private party for investors? I’ll look into it, but in the meantime feel free to write in with your tips or wildly irresponsible speculations…

EPISODE #5: Dark Kent and the ladies

Is that a cell phone in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me? Photo from MTV.com.

– Thoughts on last night’s episode “The Real World: Denver” in this, its fourth week:

1. Boring? It’s starting to feel that way. Each plot fixates on what happens when they get drunk and yell at each other. I know not every episode can address the philosophical mysteries of life, but alcohol is becoming the same plot crutch that it is on every other reality TV drama. And we thought Denver would be different!

2. They finally went somewhere other than Market Street. Of course, it was just one street over to visit Public House, but still, it’s an improvement. And they went skiing, but that doesn’t count because it was so half-assed and late in the season. At least it gave Alex a chance to drive that friggin’ Jeep they’ve been advertising heavily the last few weeks…

Interview with Jenn in East Bay Express

– The East Bay Express, which is owned by the same company as Denver’s Westword, recently interviewed “Real World: Denver” cast member Jenn Grijalva (something I was going to do until MTV put the brakes on it for no reason a couple weeks back). The 22-year-old former Oakland Raiderette from Martinez, California talks about how hard cheerleading is (“We were always fighting for the number one spot in the NFL with the Cowgirls”), her hottub makeout session with Brooke (“I explained to (my mom) that I’m a heterosexual woman and don’t want to be with other women”), and other subjects.

– She also refutes the rumors that she has a kid and explains how she started dating her friend Jared, who will appear later this season on the show, and who’s all over her Myspace profile. You can read the full article right here.

The art of “The Real World: Denver”

Posted on December.11.2006

flight
“Flight,” by Denver artist Randy S. Henderson, symbolizes man’s inhumanity to birds.

– Now that “The Real World: Denver” has finally landed, Denver artist Randy S. Henderson can tell the world about loaning his paintings to the show. Henderson, also a graphic designer at Denver-based Quark Inc., had his work featured prominently all over 1920 Market St. while the series filmed, and you’ll no doubt recognize some of it as the show progresses.

– Henderson is a self-described member of the Outsider Art scene (a.k.a. Art Brut) and has had paintings shown in Denver, New York and San Francisco, and painted custom works for movie and rock stars. I spoke with him last week about why the producers chose him, the general secrecy of the show, and whether he got all his art back without any scratches or puke stains on it…

“Real World: Denver” producer discusses stepping in to calm down Tyrie and Davis

Davis leaving

Jon Murray, creator/executive producer of “The Real World,” has given a lot of interviews to TV Week lately, probably because they don’t turn the screws too hard. But this week they actually got some interesting quotes out of him about this week’s episode, in which producers break the fourth wall by stepping in — on camera — to defuse a fight between Tyrie and Davis.

“…it would destroy our show if we were always to step in and resolve things for them. Yet at the same time we have a responsibility to make sure no one gets hurt,” he told interviewer Melissa Grego (emphasis added). That’s a fine line he’s skating there, considering how the producers allow (encourage?) the cast to get wasted frequently, a well from which much of the sex-and-race drama springs.
