EPISODE #21: No love lost
by John Wenzel on March 29, 2007

No love
Stephen and Colie discuss how little they enjoy each others’ company. That, and snacks.

– After last week’s dramarama we settle back into a more business-oriented groove for this week’s “Real World: Denver” episode. Or do we? Is there any escaping the drama? On a sunny morning Stephen’s busy in the kitchen while his out-of-town friend Darnell is putting his clothes on in Jenn’s room, following their tryst from the last episode.

– Stephen calls Chris, their Outward Bound supervisor, and leaves a message about how he’s going to be late to their meeting since he has to take Darnell to the airport. Tyrie and Davis head to Wild Oats to shop, but the real conversation takes place when Davis bitches about Stephen on the way back in the Jeep…

– Tyrie admits he’s very pro-black but not anti-white. He sees Stephen as a “white black guy,” or the “acceptable Negro.” Davis: “Do you feel like in the house Stephen is more favored than you are?â€? That’s a big NO. Everyone loves Tyrie.

– Back at 1920 Market St., Darnell hugs Jenn goodbye as he gets ready to leave. “Me and Steve are not the best of friends,” Jenn says, “Now he’s bothered by my hooking up with Darnell.â€? Uh, how could you tell? Was it the death glare?

– Jenn complains to Colie (hey, way to make an appearance!) about the way Steve looked at her when she hugged Darnell. Jenn: “Stephen doesn’t address anything. He runs from conflict. He avoids it.â€? That may be true, but I think he mostly just doesn’t give a crap.

– Colie talks about how she doesn’t want Stephen in her Outward Bound group because he’ll be judging her the whole time. Can’t argue with that. Chris shows up, looking as grade school-teachery as ever, where he sits down with the cast at a nice long table I’ve never seen before. Where the hell have they been hiding that?

– Chris laments how he wishes Steve was there, then asks how the roommates’ emotional and mental health is. Tyrie expresses how he’s not even sure he wants to be there anymore. They take a basketball break where Tyrie reveals his detox trip, then gets defensive when Chris asks how he can make it right, other than bailing. Tyrie has no good answer.

Tyrie on the court
Tyrie indicates the amount of times he has stayed sober while living in Denver.

– Tyrie: “I borderline hate myself right now. This is the worst thing that ever could have happened.â€? Uh… dude, I can think of a few things worse. At least you have all your limbs, yes? Chris: “You can play to win.â€? The avuncular talk convinces Tyrie to stay. Cheers all around.

– Stephen arrives and they talk about how to vent and get along in the wilderness, since that will be key to their success with the Hurricane Katrina kids they’ll be leading around. Colie and Jenn admit their problems with Stephen and try to smooth them over. Despite their tries, the girls seem pretty fake about it.

– Stephen admits he just doesn’t like to talk and doesn’t like to hear other people talk. He also calls Colie bitchy and she, later on, says she feels like there was no progress made. What do you expect from someone who could give a crap?

– They make plans to meet up at Monitor Rock while Stephen and Colie agree to go on a bus to pick up New Orleans kids from the airport. Or rather, they just ride along in the back while someone else drives.

Alex and Tyrie talk about the detox incident on the road. Tyrie admits that he feels worse about grabbing Jazalle by the arm than peeing in front of the house. Finally, sanity! In the other car, Jenn, Brooke and Davis call Tyrie and Alex to see if they’re lost or not. They’re on 36 instead of 70, near Boulder, so they stop at a gas station and find they’re an hour in the wrong direction. Oops.

– Stock footage of a Frontier flight landing is followed by Stephen and Colie greeting the kids at the gate with hugs. How sweet. So did they have to buy tickets to get past security, or what?

Late camp
The roommates scamble to get the camp set up before realizing they’re in the wrong state park.

– Scary music plays as the rest of the roommates roll up late in the mountains. Chris is super disappointed in them, as they’re actually three and half hours late. Yikes. The roommates frantically set up camp, and Jenn comments how she thinks they work well under pressure. The kids arrive and Colie points out how nervous they look. Eh… feed ‘em some booze and they’ll be fine.

– Chris greets them with his positivity thing. That night, Tyrie jokes about how they’re going to hunt each other with sticks and… wait, I mean go rock climbing. Stephen then mentions how he’s going to have to leave in a couple days for his sister’s wedding. Jesus, does this guy ever do any work?

– The cast heads back up to Monitor Rock where Stephen complains how Colie and Tyrie are working without him, showing the kids how to do stuff, etc. Dude — just get in there and help! Colie sees it as Stephen not even trying to help. I’m going to have to side with her. A nice ’90s-style musical montage of the kids climbing is followed by Stephen leaving, as everyone bitches about how little he seems to care.

– The next episode hints of how Tyrie and Stephen get into it about being “whitewashed.â€? Un, what about the Outward Bound shizz? Do we have to jump back into the racial drama so soon? It appears that way…

  1. Can we please talk about why Colie is always laying in bed? And why hasn’t Brooke said a word when she wouldn’t shut the hell up before?

    Comment by Tara — March 29, 2007 @ 6:24 pm

  2. Actually, Brooke said, “Yay!” after they finished setting up camp.

I agree about how fake Jenn sounded, though. She was talking about how they’d been walking on eggshells since the Mercii incident, but she’s doing THAT EXACT THING when talking to Stephen. Why didn’t she tell him what she told Colie about him running from conflict and all that? I mean, there does have to be SOME sense of class and cordiality, but then again, this IS JENN we’re talking about.

Also, I don’t understand why Stephen really cared about how Tyrie and Colie left him out. He was LEAVING. He even SAID he didn’t care about any of this, which made me start to hate Stephen again, just when I started to find him halfway likable.

I’m actually quite interested in next week’s episode. I knew right from the beginning Stephen and Tyrie would have a falling out.

  3. Colie tried to get as much rest in as possible. The weekness from Mono lasts for a long time. If you follow the time line I think they are still in July. She is seen in very few of the night time club parties. She saved her energy for Outward Bound. I am sure she’ll be back in party mode in a few more weeks.

  4. In the last comment I made, I wondered when Stephen’s crazy was gonna come out…I think this is it folks! The last Real World episode focused on how jerky Stephen can really be. He complained how Colie’s a b*tch, he appeared to not give a hoot about the kids who were participating in Outward Bound and he made it obvious how he didn’t approve of Darnell and Jenn hooking up, even though, get this Stephen, they are adults!
    P. S. I like how Brooke didn’t complain at all while being a part of Outward Bound. You go girl!

    Comment by Sara Smith — March 30, 2007 @ 8:40 am

  5. I wouldn’t say Brooke didn’t complain. They never really showed her doing anything to complain about. Just wait…there is no way that girl will go a week in the mountains without throwing a fit.

    Comment by Jonas — March 30, 2007 @ 11:53 am

  6. Jonas- Brooke didn’t have anything to complain about? Did you miss the last episode? She was in the mountains…working…setting up a tent. In her book, that’s plenty to complain about.

    Comment by Sara Smith — March 30, 2007 @ 2:24 pm

  7. Maybe they’re saving all Brooke’s complaining for a 30-minute montage at the end. I, too, find it hard to believe that she didn’t go back without kicking and screaming.

I agree with everyone about Jenn’s wondeful advice-giving ways. Sort of weird how she is always the first to give advice on ANYTHING but seems to not listen to people about her drinking problem.

Remember in the old days when the Real World crew actually had to work? I’m not saying that Outward Bound isn’t a job, however it seems like they have worked maybe a total of 2 days since they got to Denver, the rest ever how many days have been spent in a drunken stupor. I guess its not a bad job if you can find it, maybe I shouldn’t complain.

One last thought - remember the last episode, when Tyrie just returned from jail and called his Dad? His Dad reminded him that he will have to answer questions about his incident one day when he’s a Senator or Congressman? The boy’s gonna have some ’splanin to do!

  8. When did this episode air??

    Comment by Kim — March 31, 2007 @ 5:38 am

  9. This episode aired on March 28th.

    Comment by John Wenzel — March 31, 2007 @ 11:29 am

  10. I watched the last episode and I don’t remember any of that stuff happening. Am I smoking too much pot?..or is it because I’m from Toronto and there is an airing difference between Canada and the US?

    Comment by Kim — April 1, 2007 @ 12:35 am

  11. One more thing…anyone has the right to dislike Brooke, but calling her a psycho is a bit overboard. A psycho kills people, hurts children, and will destroy your life. Brooke has anxiety issues and I believe it was caused by her being teased in grade school (I think she said that too) childhood bullying can really mess a person up…sometimes for life. My sister, who is now 32 ,suffers from panic attacks because the kids at school used to hit her and verbally abuse her. My sister is a bit “off” but she’s also the sweetest person on earth. So please people, have some compassion and choose your words wisely.

    Comment by Kim — April 1, 2007 @ 12:44 am

  12. OMG I’m still at episode #17…it aired this pass wednesday in Toronto….we are waaay behind.

    Comment by Kim — April 1, 2007 @ 12:49 am

  13. Kim, i agree with you about Brooke. I think people who haven’t experienced anxiety or known someone with it don’t understand it at all. It’s wrong to call it “psycho”. And even if it was, how cruel to call someone that. I think people must have a lot of anger they are loving to get out at other’s expense.

    Comment by cattyone — April 1, 2007 @ 12:57 pm

  14. Wenzel, I’m just curious. What made you such a bitter person regarding this show? You don’t even limit your comments to these kids’ goofy behaviour - you bash on production aspects (’Or rather, they just ride along in the back while someone else drives’…’So did they have to buy tickets to get past security, or what?’) So much of your writing has an underlying tone of vindictiveness. I find your writing style unpleasant and am frightened if you are an example of the future of journalism. Take your ethics class again, mate.

    Comment by Viewer — April 1, 2007 @ 6:11 pm

  15. OK….how about instead of “psycho” , we call her “pathetic prissy spoiled brat”?

    Comment by Laura — April 1, 2007 @ 8:45 pm

  16. Who said Brooke was a psycho?

    Comment by Sara Smith — April 2, 2007 @ 8:59 am

  17. Viewer: I just call ‘em as I see ‘em. Maybe “vindictiveness” is a product of my awareness of the realities of network television. See http://www.getrealdenver.com/2006/06/27/intimidation-mtv-style or http://www.getrealdenver.com/introduction-the-basics. More to the point, the tone of my blog is far different than the tone of my regular writing for The Denver Post, which I like to think is fairly open-minded. I like to stir things up, yes, but I reserve particular ire for “The Real World.” The show is a piece of crap, and in that it’s certainly not unique in the television world. But the fact that it calls itself “The Real World” is joke, especially in light of the fact that past seasons had some actual social value.

    Comment by John Wenzel — April 2, 2007 @ 10:32 am

  18. I don’t think Brooke is a psycho, but she is a tad sensitive. She appears not to have alcohol issues along with Steven. Everyone else in the house consumes way too much booze. It will rob them of their looks and make their abs FAT! Do the youth of America really drink like this?
I noticed Colie is in bed all the time. What’s up with that?

    Comment by Anonymous — April 2, 2007 @ 10:50 am

  19. I dunno, John, yur last comment makes you look bad. Hey theres too much meanness in this world as it is and you run this site as an outlet for your hatred???? Not kool. Do you feel OK about what yur doing? Which is worse RW —or all the hostility that it gets???

    Comment by Darc — April 2, 2007 @ 11:18 am

  20. John, don’t listen to any negative comments that people write on this blog. For every negative comment that’s out there, there are 10 positive ones. I enjoy your RW commentary immensely; it’s pretty funny. Keep up the great work!

    Comment by Sara Smith — April 2, 2007 @ 12:36 pm

  21. Anonymous: “The Real World” is definitely worse. The hostility is simply amusing.

    Comment by John Wenzel — April 2, 2007 @ 12:41 pm

  22. Whenever I read/hear someone talking trash about other people, the words they use usually describe the person speaking them. I find that very amusing. They are telling me who they REALLY are and they don’t even know it lol

    Comment by Kim — April 2, 2007 @ 2:07 pm

  23. kim… um, that doesn’t make any sense. so someone describing a child molestor or murderer is actually a child molestor or murderer themselves? your logic is flawed.

    Comment by rob — April 2, 2007 @ 2:43 pm

  24. I can tell the difference between spite and fact.

    Comment by Kim — April 2, 2007 @ 3:09 pm

  25. Kim try another site, this one is not for you! Most of the people in this Denver house have some serious issues. What happens when they actually get into the real world and need to work for a living? My vote goes to Steven, he’ll do okay. As for all the others, maybe “Road Rules” will support them for a while. Brooke will probably do ok as well. I’m not a fan of this group at all!

    Comment by Anonymous — April 3, 2007 @ 8:41 am

  26. Davis is a bit of a trouble maker. He sort of reminds me of a young jr high school girl. He brought up the subject of people in the house not liking Steven to Tyrie. Steven does his best to look on the bright side of things, he does not dwell over catty fights and moves on. I’m glad Brooke threw water in his face, ha!

    Comment by Anonymous — April 3, 2007 @ 8:46 am

  27. Maybe psycho isn’t the right word for Brooke, but all the people defending her actions blaming them on anxiety is lame. She’s 25 years old. When does she grow up and take responsibility of her own actions? Does anxiety give her the right to kick and scream like a child?
And Kim - everyone has been picked on at one point in their life. It doesn’t give one a license to act the way Brooke does. Of course she can act anyway she chooses, but she should also expect criticism as well…especially since she is on a reality tv show. Maybe instead of taking a summer to join the RW, maybe should of spent the summer speaking with a therapist?!?

    Comment by Jonas — April 3, 2007 @ 9:25 am

  28. No matter what you want to call her…the girl is a little bit odd.

    Comment by Jonas — April 3, 2007 @ 9:26 am

  29. Remember the very, very first episode of Real World airing way back when? Let’s quote housemate Heather with her famous saying “can’t we all just get along”? This Colorado group seems to have a hard time with all the estrogen and testosterone swirling all throughout their tidy brick home. Sometimes I think Jen and Colie are just mean girls. I thinking I don’t like them much.

    Comment by Anonymous — April 3, 2007 @ 10:52 am

  30. c’mon — all the women on this show are psycho nut jobs — they don’t have a rational bone in their bodies. But this is what the producers look for — great, self-centered nut jobs who will get drunk, screw around and act as bitchy and nutty as they can. Makes for great television . . . but no one can claim these kids are anything that we want other kids to be. Please, stop rationalizing their irrational behavior!

    Comment by Big Bare — April 3, 2007 @ 3:52 pm

  31. Um, Big Bare…did you notice all the men are the show are “psycho” (excuse my term, Kim) nut jobs also? One’s an uppity b*tch, another’s a confused homosexual, one’s abusive and another’s is sex-crazed. Sounds like they are on the same level as the men.

    Comment by You — April 4, 2007 @ 8:22 am

  32. Hey there, Wenzel - seems like your “awareness of the realities of network television” are the result of harassing a film crew. From what I understand, these crew members can get pretty harrassed whilst trying to get work done and you didn’t help matters a bit. You’re also doing quite the lovely job at providing this show what must be some very appreciated exposure. Good on you, mate - I just call ‘em like I see ‘em, indeed!

    Comment by Viewer — April 4, 2007 @ 4:42 pm

  33. Viewer: Ah yes… I do love the old “harassment” argument. You sure sound a lot like the production assistant that threatened me with “harassment” charges. If you think what I did (taking pictures on public property, never interacting with or approaching the cast) constitutes harassment, I’d hate to live in your world.

If anything, the crew went out of their way to interfere with normal people’s lives while they were here in town. If you had ever been around them, you’d know that.

  34. if you guys think john wenzels comments are harsh you must not ever read tvgasm’s blogs… and they frickin’ HOST the aftershow for god’s sakes. if you hate this site why are you reading it?

    Comment by rob — April 4, 2007 @ 4:59 pm

  35. Why does Colie mumble when she talks?
I have a hard time understanding her, at times she sounds like a man in drag. She is a mean snotty girl who probably bossed everyone around in her sorority.
What will become of our dear Colie who loves to lay around in bed all day and make out with numerous guys? Umm…perhaps she’ll go on Road Rules!

  36. John Wenzel only speaks the truth here people! Go play outside in your sandbox if you don’t like this site. See ya!

    Comment by Anonymous — April 5, 2007 @ 8:03 am

  37. I agree with Rob’s comment. People who sit and bash this site are like those kids in elementary school who go around picking on others cuz they have nothing better to do. Viewer and all you other haters, go find something better to do with your time.

    Comment by You — April 5, 2007 @ 8:27 am

  38. Regarding comments stating “people who bash the site…”: I see a definite parallel between that arguement and people on this site bashing the show. If you don’t enjoy the show - don’t watch it - don’t create a blog - find something better to do yourselves. Then again, as Wenzel has so beautifully illustrated, we all love to bitch about something!

If your knee-jerk reaction is something to the effect of, “oh, we’re all offering our criticism” then please, consider me as doing just the same.

    Cheers!

    Comment by Viewer — April 6, 2007 @ 5:02 pm

  39. Everyone that says Brooke can control her anxiety must not go through it. So if you dont you have know room to talk because you don’t know what it’s like.Well I do and I am not the only one a lot of other people in the world do too. It’s just like all these other problems in the world people need help controling like alchol, smoking etc. And you never know what’s going on in someone’s life so don’t judge them. I am not saying people should take other people’s crap even if they can’t help it if someone who has anxiety attacks is going crazy and getting in your face you have the right to say something to defend yourself.Like the time Brooke and Jenn got into it and where calling each other names Jenn had the right to defend herself. On the other hand Jen acts like should understands brooke’s break down’s and she takes advantage some times and laughs about it instead of just keeping her mouth shut she made it worse. It just comes down to the fact everyone should pick there battles with brooke. There is a right time and a wrong time to fight back. Well By y’all

    Comment by Anonymous — April 15, 2007 @ 8:47 pm

  40. Alright anonymous, if Brooke can’t control her anxiety and the disturbing actions it brings on, then she should seek treatment. Just like an alcoholic should seek treatment if it is effecting others. To say, oops…I have anxiety and you need to be sensitive to my crazy actions, isn’t going to cut it! She needs to deal with it!
