Outwardly bound, inwardly hating each other.
– More Outward Bound adventures greet “The Real World: Denver” cast in this installment, testing their nerves, their ability to get along (or not drink for more than 24 hours), and their way with kids. Here’s a liveblog:
8:01: Flashbacks from previous episodes include the clips of tension between Stephen and the rest of the roommates, Tyrie getting along well with the Hurricane Katrina kids, and more.
8:02: Alex and the Katrina boys hike near the North Fork Lake Creek, with Tyron and DJ at the back of the line, complaining and resting frequently. Alex tries to spur them on, to no avail. Adjusting to the above-treeline altitude must be a frickin’ bitch for a group of below sea-level newbies…
8:03: They arrive at snowmelt pond (or tarn) at the top of their climb and Alex and their Outward Bound advisor Chris jump shirtless into the clear, icy water while the rest of the boys watch. Eleven seconds in and they’re out (having been at the top of a 14,000 peak — even in the summertime — I get chills just watching them. Jesus.)
8:04: Katrina kids Chris and Dernell have a face off in the freezing water, seeing who can stay in the longest. They’re in almost three minutes when Chris tells them to get out so they don’t get hypothermia. Eh… what’s the harm? Hypothermia’s fun.
8:05: Alex gives the guys a pep talk when they return to camp. Afterwards, everyone (except Stephen that is… dick!) sits around talking, unified by their hatred of Stephen. Apparently he’s not going to be back until the next night, which seems to vex Brooke mightily. Either that or she’s chewing on a bug.
8:06: They discuss climbing Mt. Champion the next day, Tyrie giving another friendly pep talk as Chris looks on, seemingly proud of him for taking charge. That, and not peeing in public again.
8:07: Day Four dawns with Jenn telling the teens the roommates will lead them up the mountain so they can learn navigation skills. Uh, like the skills that got them to the campsite 3 1/2 hours late? As the day wears on and grows warmer the teens begin complaining again. DJ and Tyron start lagging and Tyron declares he quits, Tyrie shaking his head.

Colie couldn’t be in this photo because she was carving Alex’s name into her arm.
8:12: “Attitudes happen. I don’t trip over that,” Tyrie says. “Ya’ll are kids, but I want you to take the good stuff away from this and leave the bad stuff.” His motivation seems to work as they finally arrive at the top of the 13,646 peak. It looks like they barely disturbed anything to get up there, but based on this blog post from last August, we know differently.
8:13: They sign the Colorado mountain register and Jenn says it’s “the most fulfilling sense” she’s had her life. My most fulfilling “sense” is taste, but it wavers between that, smell, touch, and hearing. I bet getting back to Denver, getting wasted, and making out with someone again will be up there for her, too.
8:14: Back at camp Stephen arrives from his trip to see his sister as everyone else is getting quite buddy-buddy. Stephen complains about being up since five in the morning and Colie’s like, “I’ve been up since five too.” Stephen: “Oh, you climbed the peak?” YES, SHE DID.
8:15: That night they circle the campfire as Chris explains he wanted to help the kids find a source of strength within themselves. Like a senior retreat, everyone starts blubbering. And then Tyron speaks, talking about how grateful he is and barely containing himself from sobbing. It’s probably the most genuine moment of the season so far, mostly because he seems truly affected by the experience. It’s a reminder what a sad piece of sh*t “The Real World” is these days. If we had more of these moments, the show wouldn’t get the constant flak it does.

“So… does anyone have any matches? Or booze?”
8:16: “Thank ya’ll for not giving up on me,” Tyron finishes. You’re welcome dude, thanks for making the episode. The next day they get their photos taken (probably where this pic was shot — notice the weird absence of Colie) and give their goodbye hugs. Stephen says he feels like he had the least connection to the kids. (Psst, Stephen: Brooke and Davis barely said a word to them too. Wait, I forgot this episode is about hating you. OK, back to that.)
8:17: In beautiful downtown Leadville (wtf? was the abandoned mine unavailable?) the cast endures their Outward Bound evaluations with Chris. He lauds Tyrie for his non-stop connections with the kids. On the other hand, Stephen has a “medium-level” motivation for getting the job done. Hey, better than the zero level he started with.
8:18: Of course, Stephen seems unconcerned about being “a little checked-out” of the situation. A little? He says he feels like he’s getting crapped on and that there’s nothing he can do about it. I suggest wearing a raincoat, to prevent the crap from getting in your eyes and hair.
8:22: Back in Denver, Stephen and Alex discuss their evaluations at Pat’s. Stephen, a bit tipsy, goes off about not being able to fake his enthusiasm for the job. “Brothers of the bride don’t usually get to choose where the wedding is.” Huh?
8:23: Alex explains to Stephen about how he was getting dogged on by Tyrie and Colie the whole time he was visiting his sister. Ah, the backstabbin’… “If they have anything to say they should say it to me!” Stephen asserts. Damn skippy!

Colie holds back vomit as the watches Alex talking to another girl.
8:24: Colie and Davis walk in, Colie obliviously eating some of Stephen’s fries. Stephen goes outside to smoke, presumably so he doesn’t rip Colie’s face off in anger. Davis heads outside to console him, the good Christian boy that he is.
8:25: Davis says Tyrie thinks Stephen is “integrated” into white culture, to which Stephen says, “How rude” (you know, like Stephanie from “Full House”). Back at 1920 Market Street, with some random blonde in the courtyard, Stephen and Tyrie are in the couch room having a chat.
8:26: They both seem a bit drunk, although surprisingly their heated discussion doesn’t escalate into a yelling fight (probably because Brooke’s already passed out ). Tyrie calls Stephen the “acceptable Negro,” and then points out how Stephen called him a “hood” in the beginning (like that’s a bad thing).
8:27: It seems they don’t have a problem with each other after all (except talking talk sh*t behind each others’ back and comparing who’s more black… but, you know, problem solved). They finish by saying they want things to be as kosher as possible. Since they’re both Jewish.
8:28: The next night at Tavern Downtown Stephen is again talking to Alex about how Colie is a bitch, with more random groupies surrounding them at their table. It never gets old. They hop a street over to Public House for more libations and conversation, although it looks more like the Sports Column to me. Ah… editing.
8:29: Stephen finally confronts Colie there. “I don’t f***ing hate you,” he says. Colie’s reply: “You think I’m this bitchy, bossy sorority girl.” Only one of them is right. Colie looks alternately sad, wasted and confrontational as she listens to Stephen blather away. She backtracks and says she wants to work things out. What a turnaround. Yay alcohol!
8:30: Colie apologizes and says she feels like a jackass, then ends the episode with a big hug. Blech. The show bleeds into Road Rules without any previews of next week’s installment. Could it be the one where they go to Thailand for their cast trip? Nope, it’s the one where Brooke and Davis spar, Tyrie gives Jazalle the hostile runaround, and Brooke’s psychologist parents visit. Yawn.

A couple of things bothered me about this episode. What a shock, huh? Anyway…I didn’t like how Davis told Stephen that Colie talks about everyone behind their back and he told him what Tyrie said about him. How come no one confronts Davis about his gossiping and backstabbing? Also, I do think it was mature of Stephen to talk with the ones who were having issues with him, but does he have to be such a baby? He whined and complained about how he was viewed poorly on the job. Dude, if you’re not there, you don’t get a positive job evaluation. Yes, we ALL know that you had to attend your sister’s wedding, but you faced the consequences of leaving your job by getting a poor evaluation. That’s called life!

totally right on about stephen. people bitch about the girls on this show as being whiny, but stephen’s probably just as (if not more) whiny than all of them.

Brooke’s email and myspace accounts have been hacked into by some evil jerk. Please disregard any gross photos and/or comments. That was not her. If the “person” who did this is reading this, let me promise you this: You WILL be discovered and prosecuted.

I hate Davis so much now. I just LOVE how he told Stephen TYRIE thought he was “integrated” when HE was the one who called Stephen a “white black guy.” Then again, maybe it was just some sort of payback for the whole fight between him and Tyrie, where no one mentions that is was STEPHEN’S FAULT FOR THE WHOLE FIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
And are Brooke’s parents really psychologists? Hmm, maybe they can give some insight into why she’s so damned damaged.

If the show keeps on the way it is it will not get pass a 20th season. These people should be totally ashamed of how they are portraying themselves in front of millions of people. I think MTV should do better background checks before they hire someone and not just walk into a bar and pick the trashiest people in there. Its a shame because I have seen just about every episode of every season and if its just going to be a drunken sex fest I don’t think I will continue to watch.

I am getting so tired of this group! Jen posing at the top of the mountain with her fingers positioned to her favorite saying “rock star”. They drink way to much, they smoke (hey, is smoking even popular any more…you know with the cancers it causes) they bore me!

Was anything really resolved between Stephen and Colie after their “big discussion?”
Comment by Sara Smith — April 9, 2007 @ 10:11 am
Colie and Steven did resolve their issues with each other and are now big friends. They talked it out and realized they do not hate each other at all! How nice. Now back to Davis…he is a straight up trouble maker always tattling on people in the house like a 2 year old. I agree, these Colorado housemates are starting to get old. let’s move onto something better folks!

Did anyone see the previews for the next episode? Looks like Brooke has a complete melt down and trashed the place. You see her throwing stuff around and screaming. Hey Brooke, better call your parents to switch up your meds, they ain’t working so good! Is Brooke a spoiled crazy person or is she bipolar? What’s going on here? Someone call 911 cause she needs help!

Tyre is the most amazing person in this cast:
He has the lowest low- the drunk tank- and the highest high- they way he motivates those students.
