EPISODE #28: The end, my friends

Later Skater
“The Real World: Denver” cast members greet their dignity as it appears on the horizon.

– After tonight “The Real World: Denver” is no more, unless you count reruns, reunion specials, the inevitable DVD, and Inferno 3 Real World/Road Rules challenge, which includes most of the Denver roommates. OK, so maybe it’s not The End, but it’s mercifully close. Here’s a liveblog of the one-hour, sex-tastic season finale:

8:00: Flashbacks from the 18th season include Davis and PJ’s relationship, plus Stephen and Jenn’s burgeoning sexual attraction that started in Thailand.

8:01: The roommates return from said Thailand trip and Davis immediately gets on the phone. Various shots of the roommates unpacking their luggage are intercut with Davis saying how they’ll wrap up on Tuesday

8:02: They head to Jet Hotel (site of the below photo) while Jenn and Stephen sit on the couch and bond over — what else? — drinks. “You’d think Jenn’s this huge party girl and she’s got this rock star image, but when it comes down to it she’s a great person,” Stephen opines. “You have to dig deeper than the surface to find that.” Yeah, not too deep buddy.

Steve and Jenn 1
Stephen and Jenn cozy up on the couch at Jet Hotel during their last week of filming.

8:03: “The way she looks at me lately has been kind of different,” Stephen says, adding he’d like to maintain some sense of normalcy during their last week in town. Meanwhile, Davis and Alex hit The Church, an iconic Denver nightclub and converted house of worship.

8:04: Davis and his “friend” Josh hang out while Alex looks on, noticing them flirting more as the night wears on. They hop in a cab and head back to the house, Davis doing whiskey shots while the other roommates wisely sit in the kitchen and soak up their booze with food.

8:05: “I think he has pretty good boundaries as far as PJ is concerned,” Alex says. Cut to Davis and Josh hanging out in the girls’ bedroom talking to Colie. Davis drunkenly hits on Josh as the whiskey takes hold, proving maybe those boundaries aren’t so good.

8:06: Davis leaves the room and Colie asks Josh whether or not he’d hook up with Davis. What do you think? Moments later Davis and Josh hop into bed, Jenn and Colie watching from a few feet away, mouths agape. Stephen and Brooke gossip about it while a cadre forms around the bedroom door, giggling like kindergarteners.

8:07: Colie and Jenn jump onto Stephen’s bed and actually watch the guys going at it under the covers. “He’s going to really regret this in the morning,” Brooke says. She probably regrets she wasn’t in that bedroom with Jenn and Colie.

Jenn and Stephen bond over their mutual ignorance of relationship fidelity.

8:11: Stephen quickly uses the takeover of the boys’ room as an excuse to sleep in Jenn’s room. Subtle. Everyone gathers in the kitchen and talks about what a huge deal it is that two guys are having sex upstairs. Woo. Alex and Stephen leave for the patio to shoot some hoops, preferring to exit the discussion once its maturity level reaches an utter low.

8:12: Colie tells Jenn this isn’t the first time Davis has messed around with Josh, and Jenn seems a little taken aback. Pot call the kettle black , much?

8:13: After their tryst, Davis throws on a pair of boxer shorts and escorts Josh outside, immediately coming back in and getting on the phone to call PJ in Argentina. Regret works fast!

8:14: Stephen stops Davis from making the call. Davis denies having sex with Josh, even though he’s drunk as hell and earlier whispered something under the covers about putting on a condom. Hmmm…

8:15: Later that night in the girls’ room Brooke’s trying to sleep while Stephen and Jenn make out under the covers. “Really and truly I feel that Jenn and Stephen are playing with fire at this point,” Brooke says. “When you’re in a relationship I feel that it’s not appropriate to sleep with someone else.” Her mastery of the obvious is staggering.

8:20: The next morning finds Jenn and Stephen still in bed, smiling and looking satisfied. Where’s the cigarettes? During an interview Stephen says the whole situation is confusing as hell. Not really, dude. You’re both horny and willing to cheat on your significant others. It’s that simple.

More Stephen and Jenn
Look familiar?

8:21: Stephen unloads his past on Jenn, to which she says: “I never thought Stephen would open up to me.” Uh, it helps when you’re laying in bed with someone. The next day Brooke asks if they hooked up and Stephen seems offended she even asked. He might as well get offended by someone inquiring what he ate for breakfast.

8:22: Tyrie says he was concerned they hooked up too, although it’s unclear why he gives a damn. Davis finally gets a hold of PJ, who tells Davis he saw something incriminating on his Myspace profile about Davis’s potential hookup. They decide to settle it over email, PJ sounding close to tears.

8:23: “You know when you do something and you’re beside yourself with disgust and regret?” Davis says. “That’s how I feel.” That, and hungover. He emails PJ telling him how much he loves him, and comments to the camera that he wanted to show gay people could still be faithful to each other in a healthy relationship. Right. When they’re not getting wasted as an excuse to cheat on their boyfriends in Argentina.

8:24: The roommates head out to what looks like Public House where Jenn gives Davis a lecture about cheating. Davis starts crying, making more excuses about why he did it (he was apparently cheated on in the past).

8:25: Now that he’s broken up with PJ he feels alone, so alone, and Stephen tries to calm him down. “I just wanna be straight,” Davis says tearfully. Wait… didn’t we already see this episode? Like, three times?

Davis crying again
“Oh my God, I just saw a guy with the same shirt. I’m not original any more!”

8:26: He continues to weep about how he wants a wife and a Christian family and etc. “Stephen, why am I not straight?” he asks. It starts to look and sound a little forced, if it wasn’t from the beginning. “I want to be saved, I want to be resurrected,” he says, straying into disturbing Messiah Complex territory.

8:27: The next day the roommates start packing up as reality starts to sink in. Or “Real World” reality, anyway. Alex says it snuck up on him. “It’s like the end of something you never thought would end.” Didn’t they tell you it would end when you signed up for this? Pickled brains hold few memories.

8:28: Davis accepts that he’s gay (again) and decides to try to get PJ back. He forces more platitudes about cutting back on drinking and how nothing good came out of it. Broken record!

8:29: They head back to Jet Hotel where Stephen and Jenn continue flirting like mad, both knowing what’s probably going to happen. They climb into the Jeep where Davis is apparently the designated driver (what genius gave him that task?) where they keep flirting and even mentioning Stephen’s girlfriend Mercii. I bet she feels great watching this.

8:30:
Stephen enters his bedroom to find Jenn already in his bed. They wait until Brooke walks by and… well… imagine some porn music. Jenn gets up and calls her Cali boy Jared at 7 a.m. because the burning shame is too much. Stephen comes downstairs dressed in a suit and carrying a Bible. Since, you know, he turns to fashion first and faith second when wracked with guilt.

8:31: He heads, appropriately, to Saint Stephen’s Church to drink some free wine. Er, clear his head. Meanwhile, Davis calls PJ again and squeezes a second chance out of him, uttering more “I love you’s.”

8:38: Seeking to cleanse his own dirty soul, Stephen calls Mercii. The very next scene he’s back in… wait for it… Jenn’s bed! The cognitive dissonance is impressive.

8:39: “I’ve got one more time to be your friend,” Jenn says in her typically soap operatic voice. She should just wait for all the promotional appearances they’ll be doing shortly. But go ahead — keep talking yourselves into doing each other.

8:40: Ah, the homestretch. Colie assembles the roommates on their last night to read some sub-high school-quality poetry , ending with an appropriate line about getting drunk. What, no mono?

drunk and cheering
Woooo!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8:41: They have their final dinner at the Hyatt Regency’s rooftop restaurant, which has some admittedly amazing views of downtown and the Front Range of the Rockies.

8:42: Who had the most sex (i.e. the biggest slut)? Colie, they decide. Then Brooke takes over the conversation, doling out her own judgments. Most heartwarming (father figure)? Tyrie. Most thought-provoking (talky)? Alex. Most inspiring (crazed)? Jenn.

8:43: Most enjoyable (gay man you can’t have)? Davis. Most relatable (painfully boring)? Stephen. Most surprising (all-around bitch)? Colie. That last point is reinforced with a scene from the last episode in which Colie pees on Brooke’s jellyfish sting. What would be most surprising is if Colie were sober when she did it.

8:44: And Brooke, of course, is the most improved, which is true. This is, after all, The Brooke Show. Piano music plays over slo-mo shots of the roommates smiling and raising glasses of champagne in a toast. And… cut to commercial. But what’s this? A preview for next Wednesday’s reunion special, which is apparently “uncensored” and “full of surprises.” I have the feeling it’s neither.

8:49: Back from commercial and the roommates are packing up all their stuff, waxing nostalgic about their imminent departure.

Alex looking retarded
Brooke laughs at a poorly-sculpted wax statue of Alex as it melts toward a candle.

8:50: A cab arrives to pick up Jenn and Tyrie. “This experience is synonymous with opportunity,” Tyrie says, weighing in with the one of the only truly intelligent comments of the season. Hugs and crying ensue, as if they won’t see each other again in a few weeks, which they will.

8:51: “This is so horrible,” Colie croaks through tears and some crappy music. Tyrie and Jenn arrive Union Station, the site of their first meeting, and give a little goodbye hug.

8:52: Another cab arrives to pick up Stephen while he and Alex play chess on the porch. “He’s definitely the kind of guy I’d like to associate with for more than a summer,” Alex says. Does it get anymore heartfelt and emotional than that? You freaking robot.

8:53: Stephen seems genuinely cool when he talks about how the experience has changed him and made him more accepting, which is certainly true when it comes to Davis and his homosexuality. Alex passes through the shot in his Jeep T-shirt. That’s two product placements for Jeep in one episode, for those of you keeping track of such things.

8:54: Colie and Alex are next. He says he’s going to miss the hell out of Denver, since everything about it exceeded his expectations. They talk about how sad it is and etc., but of course don’t say much about each other, since they hate each other now. Colie repeats the cutesy, high school yearbook quote on her Myspace page.

8:55: Oh wait, here it is: “I’m glad we had this experience,” she says of her time with Alex. The editors intercut that wisdom with her laying on his lap in the cab. I wonder if she means the “experience” of obsessing over him, then getting rejected by someone’s that’s basically a bigger binge drinker/slut than she is? They part at the airport, Alex sporting a mischievous grin. I’m sure he misses her terribly right now.

8:56: “I can walk out of here today knowing I’m a confident girl,” Brooke tells the camera, “and before I couldn’t have said that.” Then why in God’s name did you get that boob job right after the show?

8:57: Davis is next, promising Brooke he’ll stay in touch and visit her in Nashville. Dude, she lives in L.A. now. Davis says he’s accepting himself more as he’s being accepted by other people. Bully for him.

8:58: Finally Brooke is alone at 1920 Market St. with all her luggage. “It’s been exactly what I wanted and exactly what I needed,” she says. “I did not feel alive when I came here and I feel alive now.” A white limo picks her up instead of the standard cab, signaling that she really was the star of the season.

8:59: On her way out we catch a glimpse of the U-Haul truck that Bunim-Murray Productions had parked in front of our webcam to block us from getting shots of the goodbyes (see here). Brooke finds a card from her mom and dad attatched to a bottle of champagne. She blows a kiss as she pulls out, the city collectively wiping its cheek with an anti-septic wet nap as she drives off.

9:00: Here come the tears, streaming down my face as I yawn. But if I might dial down the sarcasm for a moment: What did you think of this season? Who was the biggest winner? The biggest loser? The best and worst to watch? Did the show make Denver look like a nightlife hotspot or a cowtown? Tell us what you think!

  4. I liked watching this season. It was crazy, but honestly I really liked watching this group. The biggest winner has to be Brooke. She was really nice when she said good-bye to each roomie. I believe it was genuine and also think Brooke is more level headed than we all think. Biggest loser by far is Colie. That poem she made up was stupid. I noticed as the cab drove away with Alex and Colie sitting in the back how much of a jelly belly Colie had. Seriously, if you see the reruns look and you’ll see it . I was surprized Stephen and Jen hooked up (they did right) a bit out of character for him. Wonder how his girlfriend felt about that? Sure hope he does not get a strange rash.

  5. Honestly, this is the first season I didn’t like any of the cast.

It’s amazing how first impressions really do ring true.

When I spoke to Davis, at Pride, he struck me as an arse. This season showed how true that was.

I love how at the end PJ and Davis get back together, knowing that weeks later Davis hooked up with Reichen Lehmkuhl, which ended his relationship with Lance Bass.

    As for the rest:

Colie - Ok, but kind of trashy [also my first impression after meeting her]

Ty - Has major anger management issues.

    Brooke - A mess.

    Stephen - A hypocrite.

Jenn - Trashy, but not as bad as Colie.

Alex - Skeezy, and can be a major arse.

I honestly think this season was very similar to Vegas [the first round].

As for Denver, I think it helped dispel the perception we’re a cow town, that we all ride around on horses, or ski to work and school.

Finally, the editing was blatantly obvious. I loved how they would show one thing happening at DC 10, yet another shot that was supposed to be related, was at Monarck.

  6. This season was by far the most exciting, incredible, and thought-provoking season of The Real World. The biggest winner was by far, Brooke. She was my favorite cast member. Brooke came into the house feeling insecure about herself and not wanting to put trust in anyone. Throughout the show she did a complete 180. The biggest loser is Colie. She didn’t impress me at all. Throughout the show all she did was get drunk and have sex. The show definately made me want to visit Denver. I am really going to miss The Real World Denver. I feel like I know some of the cast members after watching them for six months. I don’t think Denver can be topped.

  7. I really don’t understand Colie being the biggest slut? Am I wrong didn’t Jenn sleep with every guy she came across? Colie is needy and indecure but Jenn is a slut. How can she talk to Davis about cheating when she did it many times herself and just slept with Stephen. Give me a break, Alex and Stephen, Stephens best friend, tattoo guy and everyone else under the Denver skyline. Colie slept with her ex-boyfriend Cory and the guy in Thailand. Hands down Jenn has her beat in the sex department.

  8. Amazing summary as always.

Maybe I was high/drunk last night, but for the life of me, I couldn’t understand what Jenn said to Stephen (I think) at the dinner after Colie found out that she had won the “Most Sex in the House” award. Could anyone translate it for me, or is it not important?

And my goodness, Colie’s poem and Dr Seuss quote had me punching myself in my own balls.

Did Alex even say anything of substance in this episode? All I remember him doing was wearing his new green hat.

Okay, my final thoughts on Denver -> I still think it looks like a pretty fun place. I mean, I’m a smart person and know there’s more to the city than all the bars, and I sort of wish that the cast members would have explored the city more. I’m in NC, so I believe I can judge a cowtown when I see one, and I don’t think Denver is one. I still can’t get over the fact that the cast had to “work” for a total of about 20 days with Outward Bound over the entire period. I really don’t think that anyone came out as “winners” on this season, but as Colie’s MySpace page says, you have to hurry and book her soon!!! And I guess Brooke will be in some more bad country videos, but now with bigger boobies.

    I’ll stop now.

  9. Brooke owned RW by the end after a slow start and a bunch of bobbles along the way. She had a lot of storylines and memorable statements, the best being the “bowling” comment, hilarious. she really did seem to grow, which is what Murray says RW is all about. She put herself out there in a risky way, instead of just doing the safe things like hooking up and drinking. Weird, shes the anxious and scared one, but also the one who took the most chances, go figure.

Tyrie. an interesting guy cause hes not what he appears, he’s prolly a sensitive and sweet guy who acts tuff. The show never really revealed him, or he didn’t reveal himself maybe. Lost opportunity because there’s a lot more their than it seems.

Alex. Lots of good comments along the way, he anelyzed things, but very controlled i never got a good picture of whats really going on with him. May be the guy was too mentally healthy for a reality show. He never seemed angry or scared or upset about anything.

Colie. She has leadership ability and she’s smart. She has a great future. but shes no doubt wondering what went wrong, she played the RW game the way you’re supposed to, with lots of sex and alcohol and watnot, and then then the show airs and everybody puts her down for doing what shes was “supposed” to do. I say give the girl a break.

Jenn does what she wants. She was easy to like and to watch - until the Steven thing, which seemed kinda embarassing for them both. I wish they didnt. But I luv Jenn.

Davis. Lots of feelings, including different feelings about the same thing, like sex and religion. You know the Davis story isn’t finshed. Good luck Davis.

Steven held back till the end. Like I say, kinda wish youdidnt with Jenn, but hes human and that ok. Gotta respect the guy.

OK, that’s it.Gonna miss the show.

  10. Wow what a season. Brooke seemed to really pull herself together towards the end. She’s crazy, but I like her. Tyrie is an angry man, don”t like the way he treated his girlfriend. Davis annoyed me, sort of a baby. Did he really hook up with Lance Bass’ boy toy? Jen, a sloppy drunk, but at times seemed ok. Alex was cool, remember he’s a psych major. I just hated his bathing suit when they were in thailand. Colie is dumb and annoying. HATE her!!! Stephen was great, but not so sure why he slept with Jen. Probably because he could. It bothered me a bit and the whole wear a suit thing to church was really odd. get over it Stephen and he went back for more after his holy meeting with the Lord. I am not so sure about Colorado. It looked cold at times and I am not sure what time of year they were there. Was is summer or spring? They never used their pool that often which again made me think it ws chilly there. I also hated it when Brooke was walking around looking for a nail salon and it seemed like that area was really run down. I wouldnt say Co. is a cow town, but I did not seem to like the areas where this group frequented. It seemed to lack charm. I love the East Coast and what it has to offer. This said I would not visit Colorado ever. I will miss this group I think they were the best so far.

  12. What happened with Stephen and Jen? Can’t understand why they got together, very weird. Maybe they just said “go for it”, no strings attached. It happens…..but it just seems really weird they became so friendly. To Bon Jour Pee Wee, you met all these roommates? Where? Did Davis really go with Lance Bass’ boy toy? Explain!

  13. Mostly, it was pretty boring. The most interesting times were the Outward Bound episodes and the Thailand trip - they should have spent more time covering those. I agree with the Blog author when he says the Katrina (boys) episode had some genuine moments - showing people truly positively affected by the experience (that were then glossed over). It’s a shame that there were about 18 boring/repetitive episodes showing these dull dimwits getting drunk in the same five bars.

In general, the only interesting thing about the cast was that they were drunk, whiney, and/or slutty. I wouldn’t say Denver looked too much like a cowtown - they really only ever showed 5 blocks of the city.

The only truely good Real World series I watched was the San Francisco one.

  14. I still don’t understand Colie being the biggest slut did I miss an episode or two or three where she slept with more people than Jenn? Does everyone else have the two mixed up because from where I watched Jenn clearly beat out eveyone in the sex competition. She even outnumbered the guys including Alex. So please would someone explain how Colie is the bigger ho?

  16. Being from Denver I was very dissapointed in what they showed of the city/state. They could have done sooo much better. It is an interesting, wild, awesome, cultured, unique place with lots to do. The summer’s are not cold and are beautiful. There is so much more to Colorado and Denver than what they showed. I was so excited to see how they showed the city and the people, ultimately I felt very let down. They could have shown so much more, even just better pictures of downtown, it’s a very interesting area with lots to do other than the bars. They barely touched the surface and I understand that it is a show about 7 strangers but it is also called Real World DENVER, give the city some respect. That’s all.

Wow…Your cast analysis matches mine. You must know them personally.

” Colie. She has leadership ability and she’s smart. I say give the girl a break.”

Colie is my BFF…She does not read the blogs. Your right, she played the game. For every 100 positive “fan mail” notes recieved there is maybe 1 negative. It’s only the anonymous bloggers that talk crap. She is back in the real real world and prospering.
Her my space quote holds true. ” “”Say what you mean and mean what you say, because the people that matter don’t mind, and the people that mind don’t matter.”- Dr. Seuss”

We all love her and think she’s great.

  20. You seem pretty hurt & therefore bitter by the fact that they didn’t want outside intrusions of their filming process? Shocking that they would want that I know but seriously, can’t you look at the positive affects this may have on Denver. The great shots of the mountains, positive exposure not only for the city & the state but also the Outward bound organization that they worked with. And when was the last time that the Real World cast actually did something worthwhile & meaningful like having the kids from NO come in for their adventure & experiences in the Rockies? Glass half full or empty??

    Comment by coblonde — May 21, 2007 @ 11:29 am

  21. Helen - I thought the show failed to have any redeeming value, social or otherwise. They focused 90 percent on the drunken debauchery. You also say it’s not surprising they didn’t want interference. But their idea of “interference” was anyone that didn’t play by their weirdly un-”real” rules. They were guests here, and they treated a lot of people like crap.

For my part, I never attempted to get in front of the camera or approach the cast. They had their off-duty cops threaten me for snapping pics on public property (which is perfectly legal, and at a good distance, no less).

That’s when I realized how truly calculated the show was. The lies (want some examples?) and intimidation the crew used weren’t unique to this show, but it was educational to see it in action, especially for a program that’s gone so downhill in recent years.

If “The Real World” was good for Denver, no one with the city or the LoDo bar community could cite specific economic benefits. See this article: http://www.denverpost.com/ci_5896756

  23. Hey asley - good for you. Everybody needs a loyal friend.
Gotta disagree with all the criticism about RW. No value??? Well, how much “value” do the denver broncos really have? Or comedies on tv every night. Or music videos? hey if people like it and nobody gets hurt, whats the problemreally ?? And in the case of RW, you at least do see people relating to each other and dealing with everyday problems, sometimes well sometimes badly, which is more “redeeming” than most stuff onthe air. i also don’t get this protective thing about Denver - like it’s somebody’s grandmother you gotta show respect to- hey this is a big modern city, not some delicate thing. lets face it rw didnt hurt or help the city.

    Comment by McKenzie — May 21, 2007 @ 1:45 pm

  24. Excuse me. but the thing that I believe that I hated the most was the editing. I agree with what what-his-face said. They show focused on 90 percent of the drunken fits and missed out on the potentially INTERESTING STORIES. How about the fact that Davis is clearly struggling with his sexuality and (at the same time) served as the house snitch? Or how about the fact that Stephen had a problem with Davis’ sexuality that faded away? Or how about Colie being a Dirty Dirty Slore with a speech impedement? OR if you are going to focus on the drinking, show it as a PROBLEM like they did for a total of 30 seconds with Jenn and Davis? whatever.

all i’m saying is that it wouldn’t kill to back up the fluff with some substance that was actually there instead of cut-and-paste “tales of interest”, which leads me to my next point. . .

Is it just me or did the scene where stephen and Jenn hooking up seem really pieced together and friggin random? Every other time that Jenn hooked up (or anyone hooked up for that matter) it was a much bigger deal. Like jenn would stumble down some stairs in her panties talkin bout “I JUST GOT HEAD” and then subsequently get into a fight. Or Alex’s hook-up would be making some obscene noises (i.e. faking it). My point is, when I saw it, it didn’t even look like they had sex at all. Just sloppy drunk making out.

seems like MTV likes putting 20s on things and this seems like an event that they’d like to put 20s on (i.e. first episode where Jenn’s idiotically says “OMG I’m having sex). Really just seems like an anti-climatic attempt at some fireworks to me.

That’s my piece. it was good for what it was worth.
