Music all up in yr area

This is going to rock far harder than it is to read.

– If you couldn’t get your fill of local music at this weekend’s Westword Music Festival (and we have this funny feeling you couldn’t), get ready for The Denver Post’s 2007 Underground Music Showcase on Aug. 11. The 60+ bands already confirmed will gather at various clubs on South Broadway for a day of revelry, bad hipster haircuts and most of all, kickass music. How can you beat that?

– How about by being cheaper than Westword’s fete? That’s right: $10 gets you into all the venues in Denver’s own little version of South by Southwest. From Born in the Flood and Hot IQs to solo acoustic acts, the festival promises to be the top local music event of the year. And you won’t have to fight through reams of corporate sponsorship to enjoy it (only the bands get paid at our fest — all the rest is volunteer).

– Check back here for more details, or see the flyer above for a tentative list of bands and venues. The Post will also be running its annual underground music feature in the coming weeks…

Rude, crude and pretty funny

Hate the show, not the man.

– Remember “Full House”? Sure you do, at least if you were alive in the ’80s. It was about the blandest, most white-bread sitcom on TV, and it was on for freaking eight years, inexplicably. It included a pair of pre-pubescent Olsen twins (before they looked like emaciated aliens) and more bad haircuts than a Nascar event.

– And yet Bob Saget, the show’s lead and the host of ABC’s equally annoying “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” is actually a damn funny comedian. Crude as hell, mind you, but funny too. I chatted with him in advance of his Denver appearance this weekend about his “Full House” days, his charity work (no, seriously) and other topics. Read it right here, or watch his ridiculous (and also kinda funny) video below…

Wax & fuzz at Sputnik

– Looking for some sweet retro goodness to get you through the working week? Look no further than John Hill’s Hi-Fi Listening Party. Hill should be familiar to most indie rockers due to his guitarist role in pop-purveyors Apples in Stereo (formerly of Denver) and local heroes Dressy Bessy. And if you’ve heard either, you won’t be surprised to know he’s a big fan of groovy ’60s music.

– Hill gets a chance to bust out his favorites tunes every Tuesday at the all-vinyl Hi-Fi Listening Party. No iPods or CDs here. In fact, Hill even brings his own vintage speakers and stereo equipment to preserve the warm analog vibe. Check it out on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Free, Sputnik, 7 S. Broadway in Denver.

Elitist Hipster Snobbery

These girls actually want you to come in. No, really.

– The tongue-in-cheek title of my favorite new blog, Elitist Hipster Snob, makes its sound more exclusive than it actually is. Really, it’s just a great collection of things to do, advice, comedy and cool links. Music? Food? Sweet mother-lovin’ YouTube links? They’ve got ya covered. Check it out here to catch up on what’s hot in the Mile High City.

Music Q&A: Land of Talk

Posted on June.4.2007

Land of Talk11
Despite the name, Land of Talk also walks the walk.

– It’s nice to be loved, even if by a few people, and Land of Talk knows this. The band has received lots of love lately from hit-making radio stations Seattle’s KEXP and L.A.’s KCRW and hipster blogs Brooklyn Vegan and Stereogum.

– The indie rock trio formed at Canada’s Concordia University and recorded the “Applause Cheer Boo Hiss” EP shortly thereafter. Currently composed of Elizabeth Powell (guitar/vocals), Chris McCarron (bass) and Eric Thibodeau (drums), they’ll play Denver’s Larimer Lounge on Tuesday, June 5, with the Rosebuds and Everything Absent or Distorted (holy crap, what a lineup!)

– The band has been compared to everything from Cat Power to PJ Harvey, but its guitar-heavy sound is more rock than vocal (listen here). We caught up with Powell while she hurtled down 1-65 on her way to Chicago to chat about the Canadian music scene (Arcade Fire, Metric, Broken Social Scene), touring with buzz bands, and why music criticism is a boy’s club
