UMS, meet the Interwebs

UMS
$10 divided by 80 bands, comedians and DJs comes out to 12.5 cents per band. 12.5 freaking cents!

– Before you get your sunscreen and drink on for Aug. 11th’s massive Underground Music Showcase — the 7th annual event from The Denver Post featuring 80 of the best local rock, folk, punk, electronic, comedy, and DJs, all for only $10 — be sure to check the brand-spankin’ new website for up-to-the minute info.

– The fest’s all-ages shows take place earlier in the day, you know, for those who can only get one of the above on (we’re thinking sunscreen). Either way, you can text UMS to 26220 for a schedule on yer cell phone. If it gets any easier than that let us know… because we’ll be wicked surprised.

Spare Parts: skating and music

Posted on July.30.2007

Spare
Skating? Check. Music? Check. Driver’s license? Not so much.

– Most entertainment aims squarely for kids or adults, but Spare Parts is one specifically for teenagers. The all-day skateboarding and art event, organized by Liquid House and TS Board Shop, culminates at night with a local battle of the bands featuring Airport Scene, Broken Laces and others. Seven finalists will try to impress judges Isaac Slade (The Fray), Sloan (Single File) and Patrick Meese (Meese).

– Organizers expect about 3,500 fans to descend on Shea Stadium soccer field and Redstone Skate Park in Highlands Ranch. 2 p.m.-10 p.m. Friday, free. 1liquidhouse.com.

Cheap eats: Pints Pub

Posted on July.27.2007

Pints Pub
Like single malt whiskys? Pints Pub has over 250 of them.

Pubs seem to be all the rage, with establishments of every kind eagerly trying to work the word into their name regardless, in many cases, of how little they have to do with an actual British or Irish public house.

Sometimes lost in this scurry for faddishness is Pints Pub, which has become such a Golden Triangle fixture after 14 years that it can get taken for granted. That’s unfortunate, because there is simply nothing else like this English-style establishment in Denver, or the rest of the country for that matter…

EMerge a new type of circus

Posted on July.27.2007

emerge
If you think she looks creepy now, wait ’til she takes off the mask.

Get ready for a new breed of circus, coming tonight at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom. Unlike Cirque du Soleil or the Ringling Brothers, EMerge: Carnival of Shadows is one part rave, one part carnival, and one part performance art showcase, promising to reveal Denver’s most talented and quirky stage acts along with some of Denver’s best DJs.

Executive producer Dan Huber of Wicked i Productions is a relative newcomer to the local entertainment scene, but he has big plans for this event, including eventually graduating from a club venue to the big top

Reverb: Jimmy Eat World, Built to Spill

Posted on July.26.2007

JimmyEatWorld
Jimmy Eat World’s acoustic set at the Gothic was painfully self-satisfied.

– Missed the concerts around the Mile High City last week? Catch up with this week’s Reverb, courtesy of Ricardo Baca and John Wenzel (but mostly Ricardo Baca).

- JIMMY EAT WORLD -

There’s something to be said about playing B-sides, but it’s also something that can blow up in a band’s face. Sadly, Jimmy Eat World sounded harried and unpracticed in its mostly acoustic set of B-sides and new songs on July 19 at the Gothic.

Favoring the lesser-known songs to complement the new tracks from a forthcoming record, the band had a lot of fun on stage in front of the sold-out crowd — only it wasn’t felt by the packed audience. An awkwardly acoustic “The Middle” failed at capturing the magic of the band’s catalog, including the masterpiece “Bleed American…”
