Have a Vampire Weekend tonight

Posted on July.25.2007

VampireWeekend
Vampire Weekend is willing to suck your blood Friday-Sunday 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

– The deafening “buzz” emanating from most New York bands gets pretty tiresome after awhile (i.e. at a frequency that induces massive vomiting), but here’s an act with an honest-to-god hook: Vampire Weekend. The band, which plays at the Hi-Dive tonight with Sudden Epidemic and the Bluebird Equation, throws Afro-beat influences into its frenetic post-punk songs. Check out their Myspace page for a sample, or here for all the show details.

What the Abrams?!

Abrams 1 2
Godzilla? Cthulhu? I have no idea.

– So I saw “Transformers” this weekend with my friend Paul (I know, it’s a crap-ass movie but we were bored, it was a billion degrees in my apartment and we had $10 to kill) and saw a pretty sweet trailer before the feature.

– At the risk of playing into the marketing buzz — does anyone know what the hell this thing is for? Apparently it’s a clip from a forthcoming untitled flick from J.J. Abrams, director of “Mission Impossible 3″ and creator of “Alias” and… uh… “Felicity.” There’s a bit of speculation about it here and here, and you can watch the trailer here.

Cheap eats | Lime XS

LimeXS

Everyone has an idea of what Mexican food should be. My 10-year-old thinks it’s – ick – Taco Bell. (She’s still young; she’ll learn.) My Texas-born buddy TJ fell in love with Chevy’s, with its Tex-Mex blend of flavors and smoky, pureed tomato salsa blended with cilantro and roasted peppers.

I’m still waiting to be impressed. Because when you get down to it, most Mexican food is predictable (and too often forgettable). Once you get past the traditional wrapped burritos, chile rellenos, enchiladas, tostadas and chimichangas, there is little in the way of surprises. Sometimes the only variety you can find is in the salsa: hot, mild, red, green.

Yawn.

Lime XS, an offshoot of the Larimer Square restaurant (XS, for extra small), prides itself on being different. And that’s not always a good thing

Tiesto’s ready to put Red Rocks in a trance

Posted on July.20.2007

Tiesto
Tieso, and his assorted party people in the house.

Sometimes the best club scenes take place in nontraditional venues. Skip the dance floor, VIP lounge, and your neighborhood bar stool and head to Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Saturday night, where the Global Dance Festival brings trance superstar Tiesto – voted the top international DJ three times by DJ magazine – and a slew of other talented DJs to the great outdoors

We think Red Rocks is somewhere on the top half.

– The Global Dance Festival at Red Rocks Amphitheatre may end on Saturday night, but by then the Global Recovery Party will just be getting started. Running from 5:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 22, the event offers weary (or wide awake) dance heads a place to chill and reconvene.

– The indoor-outdoor Whitehouse Lounge venue offers over 20 DJs playing house, techno, drum & bass and breaks with comfy couches and eye-catching visuals. BBQ and booze available for the hearty of stomach. 2936 Fox St. $5. 303-298-7391.
