Apparently “The Abbey” sounded too much like a nunnery and not enough like a martini lounge.
– Last week we told you about the former “Real World: Denver” house at 1920 Market St. re-opening as The Abbey, a high-end restaurant and lounge. Well, scratch that. The owners cancelled their little party at the last minute due to “construction issues and name issues.” As of now, the space is set to open tomorrow night as Theorie Lounge (gotta love that spelling).
– The details are the same as last week’s event: Unless you’re on a VIP list you can’t get in until 10:30 p.m. The first part of the evening features free food and libations, while the public portion has music, giveaways and a night filled with “new opportunities.” You can read about some of the amusing flap surrounding the marketing of the place in a blog here…
– Speaking of that little flap, we wonder if it had anything to do with the last-minute name change? Hard to tell, as calls to owners Josh Haakinson and Shane Alexander weren’t answered on Thursday afternoon. In fact, their mailboxes were so full I couldn’t even leave a message. Yikes.
– I did, however, get a hold of JJ Walker from JFly Presents (the company putting on the party). He told me that trademark issues forced the lounge to change its name. “They did not want to spend tons of money to keep the name and be forced to open even later until the problem was resolved, so they just changed it,” he wrote via e-mail yesterday.

No, actually The Abbey is a very famous martini bar and it looks like the name was already taken.
