Cheap eats: Poor Richard’s Restaurant

Posted on September.28.2007

Seating
Poor Richard’s, near Colorado College, attracts a variety of customers.

– A long-standing gathering place for the small, enduring liberal and libertarian-leaning activists in conservative Colorado Springs, Poor Richard’s Restaurant offers healthy food served in strapping portions. The clientele ranges from students and professors from nearby Colorado College to cyclists, climbers, artists and people who seem genuinely interested in the giant bulletin board’s fliers advertising reiki massage, drum circles, independent films and music workshops

City slickers are cowpokes for a night

We know you live in a McMansion next to a mini-mall, but put on the damn hat already.

– Denver has tried hard to lose the cow-town image, but sometimes we just have to embrace our Western heritage. Take, for example, the Urban Cowboy fundraiser Saturday night at the Walnut Foundry, where a room full of urban cowboys (and cowgirls) will don cowboy boots and Western shirts to take a stab at bull riding, calf roping and cow milking…

Mile High Sci-Fi’s “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”

Posted on September.27.2007

khan
It’s going to take a lot to hurt this surly mofo’s feelings.

– Alright, I know you think you’re super cool and all, but I can see through you. I know you’re a rampant nerd, and along with that comes a love of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the seminal schlock-cable show that deflated the worst sci-fi B-movies with a gleeful, intellectual cynicism. Well, rejoice you remorseless geek, because Denver’s got its own version, and it’s frickin’ hilarious. Mile High Sci-Fi, which began life at the Oriental Theater, will show and mock “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29. at Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli Center.

– “It is similar to Mystery Science Theater but different in many important respects,” founder Matt Vogl wrote in an e-mail. “It is live obviously, and we do not limit ourselves to the obscure B-Grade sci-fi genre either. We tend to do movies that were popular in their theatrical release and that have some kind of nostalgic value for people (examples: Red Dawn, Escape from New York, Flash Gordon). Our shows are mostly scripted and in addition to jokes, we add sound effects, change the soundtracks and things like that…”

REVERB: Stephen Marley, Global Drum Project, “Beautiful Girls”

Posted on September.26.2007

Marley
I’m going to take a wild guess and say that’s not tobacco he’s smoking.

– STEPHEN MARLEY —

First impressions of this show Saturday at the Ogden Theatre started outside, where a line of ticket-holders had to sidestep one of their inebriated brethren as he fell out the front doors.

Sure, concerts and partying go hand-in-hand. But when a second and then a third drunk crashed to the theater floor in as many minutes, it was hard not to mourn how Bob Marley’s protest music has been warped into a frat-party soundtrack

Denmark love: Slaraffenland @ the Larimer Lounge tonight

Posted on September.25.2007

Slaraffenland
Colorful lads, those fellows are.

– Denmark five-piece and live maelstrom Slaraffenland are taking over the Larimer Lounge tonight with Colorado’s very own Porlolo and Jumbo Special, a bill that promises to rip out whatever’s trapped in yr skull and replace it with neon confetti, platinum sporks and a whole lot of acid-drenched chocolate syrup.

– Like the sunglass-clad, cigarette-smoking lovechild of Wayne Shorter, Tortoise and Stereolab, Slaraffenland brings the textured grooves and avant-goodness all at once. I caught these guys at South by Southwest in March and believe me, they’re the real deal. Check here for all the info.
