Meet the Onion @ Neighborhood Flix

Posted on January.30.2008

dumb world
If you don’t think our world is dumb, then you’re dumb.

The Onion, that long-running, web-savvy bastion of unrepentantly harsh political/cultural humor, is easily one of the best comedy games around. In an environment of diminishing returns from sitcoms, mainstream stand-ups and stale sketch shows, the fake news publication consistently delivers the most cutting-edge satire in the English language.

Now’s your chance to meet the Onion. Or rather, meet a couple of the writers behind the Onion’s new atlas-style New York Times bestseller “Our Dumb World.” Check the Denver presentation (they speak in Boulder tonight at Old Main on the CU campus) tomorrow night (Thursday, Jan. 31) at the brand-spankin’ new Neighborhood Flix Cinema & CafĂ©. The event is co-hosted by the Tattered Cover at 2510 E. Colfax Ave. from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. And there’s an after-party at Rockbar, so you can get drunk with a bunch of professional smartasses. Fun!

Music tonight! Wyclef Jean

Wyclef
Wyclef Jean: Far gone from the Fugees and still surprising critics in 2008.

Remember “Gone Till November”? How about “We Just Trying to Stay Alive,” that sweet track that samples the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack? Sure you do, unless you were, oh, shipped overseas or living in a cave during that prosperous dreamworld known as the ’90s.

Wyclean Jean, the former Fugees rapper/producer behind those songs, may not have reached the commercial heights of tracks like those in the years since his 1997 disc “The Carnival”, but he’s stayed consistently busy, producing diverse artists and dipping his feet in nearly every genre music…

Cheap Eats: Little India

Little India

Only a shut-in would believe there are no good Indian restaurants in Denver, but like our city’s swath of mostly forgettable Chinese joints (Chopsticks excluded) there are fewer here than in many parts of the country.

In that way, Little India’s mantle of “Most Reliable Indian Restaurant” is not as meaningful as it could be. The mixed menu offers everything from mild starters that resemble Western bar food (onion bhaji, $5) to fare that leaves you fumbling for the water glass (the stellar, facemelting chicken vindaloo, $12.99)…

Hey, smarty-pants: It’s Geek Bowl 2008

Geek Bowl

You think you’re sooooo smart, don’t you? Well… maybe you are. For those that want to prove it — or just hang out and drink while others flex their knowledge of random cultural, sports and political knowledge (a.k.a. “trivia,” which you may have heard of) — there’s Saturday’s Geek Bowl 2008 at the Oriental Theater. Yes, the Geek Bowl. And it’s sold out, fool!

We recently chatted via e-mail with John Dicker, head of Geeks Who Drink, about the event, which will be hosted by Westword’s Adam Cayton-Holland. I hosted some Geeks Who Drink “Real World”-themed trivia rounds last year back when this blog was a stalkerazzi-style deal. Suffice to say, people did not take kindly to questions about “The Real World.” I do not blame them.

Clubs: Karaoke madness, champagne goodness

My neighborhood boozer is Charlie Brown’s, (980 Grant St.; 303-860-1655). It is mere steps from my apartment, it serves pizza and its twice-daily happy hours offer two-for-ones on domestic beers and well drinks.

I know the servers and bartenders. Who could ask for more? Strangely, I’d never been there on a Sunday until last weekend. Meeting up for a post- concert drink with some friends, I looked forward to a small, sleepy crowd of locals recovering from the weekend…
