Cheap Eats: Neighborhood Flix Cafe

“Dinner and a movie” takes on new meaning at Neighborhood Flix Cafe.

Alfred Hitchcock, perhaps not content with stars or thumbs or the other arbitrary movie ratings, developed his own sliding scale: “A good film is when the price of the dinner, the theater admission and the babysitter were worth it.”

Wise, Hitch was, about the relationship between movies and food. He dined the screenwriter John Michael Hayes into scripting “Rear Window.” And he introduced Kim Novak’s doppelganger in “Vertigo” mid-meal at a fancy red-walled restaurant…

Comedy Q&A: Girls Only

Posted on January.18.2008

Girls only
Sorry, men, but you’ll have to stay at home for this one.

Most women can likely recall the coming-of-age gantlets they endured, whether buying their first bras, getting over junior high crushes or keeping detailed tabs on friends and enemies. But few discuss these travails publicly, and even fewer poke fun at them in group settings. Fear not, because “Girls Only” has returned. The two-woman comedy show, which plays at the Avenue Theater Jan. 18- Feb. 24, addresses these issues and more in an appropriately women-only audience…

Cheap Eats: Bang!

Posted on January.15.2008

bang

You have to walk around the back of the building to get to the front door. Inside, the rooms are nondescript at best. Ah, better to concentrate on the food, which deserves heaping praise…

Comedian Q&A: Christian Finnegan

Posted on January.10.2008

Comedian Christian Finnegan thinks he’s insane for booking a comedy show in Denver in January. Is he right?

Christian Finnegan should be familiar to TV audiences from his regular stints on VH1’s “Best Week Ever,” the “Today” show and even a “Chappelle’s Show” cameo, but the 34-year-old comedian doesn’t feel as if he belongs to any particular scene. Neither indie rock nor jock, low-brow nor pretentious, Finnegan brings his affable yet barbed punch- lines to the Improv at Northfield Stapleton tonight through Sunday.

We spoke with Finnegan by phone from Virginia Beach, Va., where he was performing. Here’s our extended interview with him, spanning everything from the weirdness of being on VH1 to sage time-travel advice (you know, the perennial topics…)

Magic Cyclops cares not if you love him, only that you pay attention. The oft-inexplicable Quad City Madman dons Hulk Hogan headbands, bug-eyed sunglasses and fakey British accents to further his cause, which mostly includes making people laugh and/or scratch their heads. Cyclops will release his new EP Thursday night at the Hi-Dive, with Charly “The City Mouse Fasano, Red Orange Yellow and Harvey Knuckles. 7 S. Broadway at 9 p.m. $6.
