Check out Brigid McAuliffe’s new works at City, O’ City starting on Friday.

We already know that City, O’ City — the former home of Watercourse Foods between Sherman and Grant Streets on 13th – is a great place to pop open your laptop, quaff a beer or share stories with friends. But eagle-eyed customers will also notice the coffee shop/bar frequently features some of Denver’s most daring, innovative art and photography…

That trend continues on Friday as photographer Brigid McAuliffe (also of local trio Bela Karoli, and formerly of Pee Pee) debuts works under the “Glass & Wire” banner. The informal opening, which begins at 7 p.m., showcases “an extension of a video I’ve been working on, which documents the demolition of the Gates Factory and the multifaceted issues/emotions that come with urban renewal, historic preservation and architectural memory,” McAuliffe wrote in an e-mail.

“I have been photographing the factory for years. I was originally drawn to the windows and wires, and the compositions I saw in them when removing them from strictly an industrial context. When I heard the factory (which has been abandoned for nearly 20 years) was being demolished these photographs (and my video) extended to a historical preservation of a space that once held great significance in this area.

“The video (in progress) is called Transforming Space and I would be happy to share it with you if you are interested. You can also see bits of it on my blog. The photos which will be hanging during the month of March, are a piece/preview of this larger project.”

– On March 6, a group of musicians under the name Recess (featuring Jen Gilleran, Carrie Beeder, James Hahn and Jack Leahy) will play experimental/improvised music with some of McAuliffe’s Gates footage and other projected images at the Lion’s Lair (see flyer below).
