Cheap Eats: Thai Kitchen

Step into the functional, simple Thai Kitchen in Longmont.

Squeezed into a strip mall just off busy North Main Street in Longmont, Thai Kitchen is a serene, pleasant refuge from its noisy chain-store surroundings. The decor is simple — a few wooden carvings from Thailand, some seashell-inspired art — and so are the functional tables, with utilitarian place settings. This place is about eating, not fancy ambiance.

Nearly everything on the lunch menu costs $6.50; even the wallet-buster, with seafood, remains well under $8. The price includes a small bowl of the soup du jour, a satiny rice porridge studded with vegetables and tofu strips. A little salty? Maybe, but also delicately spiced, and just the ticket for a day reluctant to yield winter to spring.

Mile High Sci-Fi’s “WarGames”

Posted on March.28.2008

Be wary of Matthew Brodericks’ insane computer skillz in “WarGames.”

Sure, we’ve written about Mile High Sci-Fi before, particularly the show’s awesome take on “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” The monthly event, which takes an ensemble approach to to mocking nerd favorites and schlocky ’70s sci-fi flicks like “Logan’s Run,” is essentially an amped-up, live-action version of Mystery Science Theater 3000. But this weekend’s installments offer a little something extra.

“Last Comic Standing” champ and Denver native Josh Blue will join the crew of Mile High Sci-Fi on Friday and Saturday to dismantle “WarGames,” the steaming pile starring Matthew Broderick that graced the world in back in 1983. Blue’s considerable popularity prompted the program to add extra shows, and according to organizer Matt Vogl, even those are likely to sell out…

Clubs: Tequila tasting, Bar Standard

mezcal 1 2

There’s a saying people use when drinking hard liquor that’s especially hard: “That’ll put hair on your chest.” That might sound pretty good to a burly macho man — or whoever wants to be one — but it’s not the best way to recommend something to female drinkers.

A lot of people say that very phrase when referring to tequila. It’s got a reputation as the drink of choice for party boys looking to get ripped. If not that, we’re supposed to like it in margaritas or another mixed form, but not so much as a liquor to be savored on its own. Jesse Morreale and his cohorts at Mezcal and Tambien are looking to change that perception, and the idea that it’s a drink for men, with ladies’ tequila tastings.

If you’re looking for proof of the community-based spirit of Denver’s music scene, get yer local music-lovin’ pants on and head down to the Oriental Theater on Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. to witness the launch of new label Creative Music Works. The non-profit, member-supported arts organization already promotes “performance and educational opportunities” for cutting-edge music, and Wednesday’s show will be no different.

Dubbed “Once Upon a Time in the West,” the concert will feature local indie, folk and rock luminaries Elephant Revival, Porlolo and Friends (feat. Erin Roberts, backed by the impressive lineup of Nathaniel Rateliff, Joe Sampson and Roger Green), gorgeously haunting trio Bela Karoli, and finally, Bottesini Project (with Ron Miles on trumpet and Scott Amendola on percussion).

Cheap Eats: Baker St. Pub & Grill

A bit of jolly old England has been incorporated into Baker St. Pub & Grill.

Among the most ubiquitous signs of March are the sprouting green clovers and college basketball. Follow that train of thought, if you will, and it will take you to your favorite neighborhood pub, albeit a bit modernized and Americanized in Colorado.

A bit of jolly old England has been incorporated into the Baker St. Pub & Grill, named for the London thoroughfare where you’d be likely to find Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous sleuth, Sherlock Holmes.
