Mile High Sci-Fi’s “WarGames”

Be wary of Matthew Brodericks’ insane computer skillz in “WarGames.”

Sure, we’ve written about Mile High Sci-Fi before, particularly the show’s awesome take on “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” The monthly event, which takes an ensemble approach to to mocking nerd favorites and schlocky ’70s sci-fi flicks like “Logan’s Run,” is essentially an amped-up, live-action version of Mystery Science Theater 3000. But this weekend’s installments offer a little something extra.

“Last Comic Standing” champ and Denver native Josh Blue will join the crew of Mile High Sci-Fi on Friday and Saturday to dismantle “WarGames,” the steaming pile starring Matthew Broderick that graced the world in back in 1983. Blue’s considerable popularity prompted the program to add extra shows, and according to organizer Matt Vogl, even those are likely to sell out…

“Show times have changed,” Vogl said. “For this month only we will have two shows on Friday and two on Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. each night. Even with four shows we can almost guarantee that they will all sell out so if you don’t want to get left out.”

So how did Mile High Sci-Fi snag one of the country’s most in-demand comedians?

Baby makin’.

“We’d actually been talking to him for awhile and he said he wanted to do one, but he travels so much. Really, the whole thing came about as the result of him not practicing good birth control. His girlfriend got pregnant and they had a baby this month, so they were able to be in town for a bit. I was talking to him probably two months ago and he mentioned this chunk of time was blocked off, and we didn’t have a person for this weekend, so it just fell into place.”

Is this the start of a series of higher-profile guests at the monthly event?

“We take it as it comes, but ideally we’d rather have a set group of maybe four to five people that do it a lot — maybe the occasional guest. But it’s really different than stand-up. It’s a different kind of writing and different kind of show in terms of pacing. Stand up is “joke-joke-joke.” In this you need to balance the jokes with people watching the movie, so it ends up being a lot of work breaking somebody new in. It’s nice having somebody Like josh who’s a friend and obviously a big draw, but at the same time it’ll be great to get a point where we have people who are there every month and know what their job is.”
