Countdown to Monolith: The Hood Internet

Posted on July.31.2008

hood 1
One lives in Chicago, the other lives in New York, but that doesn’t stop the Hood Internet from cranking out mash-up mixtapes.

This post is part of an occasional series of news, interviews and videos in advance of the Monolith Music Festival, Sept. 13-14 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

The Internet made The Hood Internet (shocking, right?) The blog where their music is posted a few times a week has helped their popular mash-ups spread across the far reaches of the interwebs.

Steve and Aaron, however, are pretty lax about their group’s online popularity. We talked them about the start of their band, how they decide what to put in their songs, and who between the two of them is the better DJ.

Eat Local: Vine Street Pub

Posted on July.29.2008

vine street

In Boulder, the guys and gals who work at Mountain Sun and Southern Sun pubs are groovy. In the restaurant group’s latest establishment, Vine Street Pub in Denver, they are hip.

Instead of Birkenstocks, dreadlocks and tie-dyes, they’ve got skinny jeans and ironic, too-tight T-shirts. And rather than a strip mall (Southern Sun) or the sanitized Pearl Street Mall (Mountain Sun), the Vine Street Pub has the corner of Vine Street and 17th Avenue, a lively patch of Denver, one of the city’s flowering little bohemias. This all works splendidly for Vine Street Pub.

Comedy Q&A: Carlos Mencia

Posted on July.25.2008

carlos
If you don’t mind, neither does he: Carlos Mencia plays Red Rocks on Saturday.

Carlos Mencia needs little introduction, as popular as his “Mind of Mencia” show has been on Comedy Central the past three seasons. That fame has found Mencia simultaneously praised for his raw, unapologetic humor and panned for allegedly stealing jokes or pandering to lowbrow mentalities. But in the end, he’s one of a rare breed of comedians that could even headline a venue like Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

He’s also the first to do so in more than a decade. We talked to Mencia in advance of his show on Saturday with Lewis & Floorwax and the Groove Hawgs) about the storied venue, his upcoming projects and the controversy over the alleged stolen jokes.

Comedy Q&A: Dave Attell

Dave Attell may be best known as the boozy night crawler on Comedy Central’s “Insomniac with Dave Attell,” but just this month, the veteran stand-up embarked on an entirely new fool’s errand via a resurrected version of “The Gong Show.”

Do we really need another debatably entertaining freak show on a medium already inundated with crap? And for someone that travels as much as he does, what does Attell think of the mood the country? We spoke with him in advance of his shows at Comedy Works on Friday and Saturday to find out.

Eat Local: Manno’s Grille at Collindale

Posted on July.21.2008

mannos
Manno’s is not your typical golf course fare — it’s better. Photo and text by Kristen Browning-Blas.

After playing 18 holes on a city course, a golfer is usually so hungry that a premade sandwich and chips is good enough. But at Collindale, a public course in Fort Collins, a famished foursome can dine on locally grazed beef, freshly made salads with house-made dressings, and big, juicy burgers on Kaiser rolls accompanied by piles of thin-cut, crispy fries.

When expectations are low, it’s easy to be wowed, but Manno’s delivers consistently fresh, carefully prepared, high-quality ingredients at prices well under similar restaurant menus in the area. Right on Horsetooth Road, Manno’s serves not only golfers — like the course, it is open to the public — for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

    • Guest_2711 : broncs are gonna crush the cardinals
    • hotorcold : well, here is the Denver broncos preseason schedule. They are playing the Texans in Texas on Saturday. The next preseason game is a home game against the Cowboys. The next game after that is another home game against the Packers, and then the next preseason game after that is against the Cardinals in ST Louis.

    • hotorcold : well, I saw the preview of the challenge, and it looks like for a few weeks we can discuss Denver life and not too much real world related stuff or challenge related stuff.
    • Lvituist : It's serious
    • hotorcold : I had no idea that the Hollywood reunion aired early and i'm glad the real world bash is back on.
    • hotorcold : Well, the last episode aired and I have to say, I'm glad that Joey is staying sober and glad that he is doing well now. I have to admit the preview for the challenge was nice too, it has a kind of survivor style theme this time with the survivor challenges. Maybe the new kids will kick butt this time.

    • jimmy : seriously. the real world is a piece of crap.
