Eat Local: Red Trolley Ice Cream

Posted on September.30.2008

red trolley

We are hardy folk in Denver. I know this because of the ice cream.

See, back East, once school comes back into session and the theme parks transition to a weekend-only schedule, the ice cream vendors (and the goods they peddle) roll themselves up and put themselves away “for the season,” assuming their frozen sweets won’t find fans during the cold months.

Not so in Denver. We scoop, slurp and lick away all year, crisp autumn nights and impending October blizzards be damned.

Music Q&A: MxPx @ the Ogden Theatre

Posted on September.23.2008

mxpx
Longtime punk practitioners MxPx play the Ogden Theatre on Thursday.

There is silence on the other end of the line. Suddenly, the dead air is cut with an unfamiliar language, a sputtered jumble of French or maybe Portuguese. I hang up the receiver, and the phone rings again. This time it’s an equally confused Tommy Rat, road manager for MxPx.

Even in the age of wireless technology, lines still get crossed, and somehow, somewhere, a third party has seeped into our introduction. The line clears, and Tommy hands the phone to drummer Yuri Ruley, who is wide awake and brimming with the goods on what MxPx has been up over the last few months.

Eat Local: The British Bulldog

British Bulldog
Craving fish and chips with a side of samosas? A pint of Boddington’s served at the proper (not too cold) temperature? A place to watch the World Cup qualifiers in the game called football everywhere but here?

You don’t have to fly to London, just head over to the British Bulldog on Broadway and Stout Street. The menu of “proper English meals,” American bar standards and Pakistani mainstays has seen some tweaks since the Little Pub Co. bought the place this summer, but new owner Mark Berzins assures regulars that’s all that will change.

Music Q&A: Everlast

Hip-hop veteran Everlast wants to put a little bit of country in your rock ‘n’ roll. Photo from Live-Metal.net.

Former House of Pain MC Everlast (a.k.a. Erik Schrody) first made a name for himself in that platinum-selling hip-hop group, but Everlast as a solo artist didn’t emerge in many peoples’ minds until his 1998 album “Whitey Ford Sings the Blues,” which emphasized the mixture of acoustic guitar and spoken-sung lyrics that has helped define his style over the years.

Everlast, who plays Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom tonight, seems poised to take back some of that notice with the fifth solo album “Love, War and the Ghost of Whitey Ford,” his first since 2004’s “White Trash Beautiful.” We talked with Everlast in advance of the show about his latest disc, his left-field Emmy nomination and why he needed the approval of John Carter Cash to cover “Folsom Prison Blues.”

Eat Local: Mio Cafe

Posted on September.9.2008

Cafe Mio
At Cafe Mio, the ingredients — and attitude — is friendly, local and organic.

If vaulted ceilings and verdant mountain views put you in your happy place, picture them with a cup of bird-friendly coffee and a buttercrisp sticky bun. That hum in your head just split into harmony.

The co-owner of Mio Cafe in Evergreen likes to joke that his eatery’s incredible pastries are fat-free and low-cal. But the shop’s focus on organic and local sources does fulfill Wheat Cripe’s pledge to serve “spiritual soul food.”

“I really believe that the food picks up the energy of the people preparing it,” says Cripe’s wife, Nancy.
