Clubs: Punk rock fashion show

“How’s my hair?”

Punks like fashion, too. They may hate The Man and all things conventional, but that doesn’t mean they’re careless in their dress. Part of punk’s appeal, after all, is its aggressive sartorial style. If you’re walking down the street with a mohawk, skinny jeans and a gross of safety pins on your person, you’ve branded yourself a clotheshorse — of sorts.

It works well, then, that Bender’s Tavern (314 E. 13th Ave.), rock club extraordinaire, is hosting a full-on “Punk-Rock Fashion Show” on Saturday. The venue, whose upcoming shows include “Legions of Death II” and “Punk, Pabst and Porn!” is a departure from the usual local fashion show setting — a tastefully lit, self-consciously chic lounge.

And that’s just the way organizer Summer Jackson wants it. “This was perfect,” she gushes. “You have no idea. I couldn’t have picked a better venue.”

Bender’s has two rooms: One is a straight- up bar area, with pool tables and a jukebox full of Johnny Cash. The other has a stage, dance floor and its own bar. That’s where Jackson fell in love. “The visual appeal is immense,” she says of the room, which glows red during shows. Jackson’s plans for her first nightclub fashion show are ambitious.

Models will walk the runway twice during the evening, with live music provided by Buford T. Justice, Diesel and the Dirty Hearts. “We’ll have the runway go off the stage,” she says. “It curves around the dance floor itself — that way people can rock out to the band, and everybody in the audience can watch the show, too.” But what about the clothes?

In another unusual twist, all the designs are from members of Jackson’s fashion-forward family: Jackson, her husband, Willy, and her brother, Jonny Applegate, are all designers. Eropersona, Jackson’s line, will draw in the ladies, while T-shirts from Willy’s Jackson Ink and Applegate’s Broken are mostly for guys.

Oh, and it’s Applegate’s 21st birthday, too, so bring the young designer some good wishes. Jackson hopes the show — her first at a club — will celebrate Denver’s fashion and music scenes all at once.

“I haven’t personally been to a club fashion show before, so I’m coming from an original standpoint,” she says. “We’re actually collaborating with the music scene. We take a lot of our inspiration from the music. … I want my clothes to represent that genre.”

Buy tickets to the Punk Rock Fashion Show at benderstavern.com; they’re $8. Day-of-show tickets are $10 at the door. The party starts at 8 p.m. Saturday; models will walk the runway around then and again around 10 p.m.

– WISH FULFILLMENT –

He’s known for throwing elaborate annual parties like the Victorian Fetish Ball and the New Year’s White Rose Gala, but now Kevin Larson is settling down. Actually, he’s just setting up a more permanent party place: His new nightclub, Wish (511 W. Colfax Ave.), opens this weekend in the former Tabu space.

Designed for guests ages 25 and older, the club promises live entertainment and swank service. It’ll be open to the public Fridays and Saturdays and function as an events center the rest of the week. The cover for this weekend’s grand opening is $5 for ladies and $10 for guys. Check this column next week for first impressions.

– HAWTIN HERE –

Summer’s winding down, but things are heating up at Beta (1909 Blake St.) On Thursday, superstar DJ Richie Hawtin mans the decks, kicking off an autumn of big names at Beta. (Get ready for the likes of John Digweed, Benny Benassi, Nick Warren and BT in the coming weeks.)

Hawtin, who moved to Canada from England as a kid in the 1970s, had the good fortune to settle down outside of Detroit. The Motor City techno scene, along with the bleeps and bloops of computers and video games, left their mark on the budding DJ. Today, he still spins and produces techno- and ambient-flavored grooves for adoring audiences worldwide.

Advance tickets for Thursday’s show are $10 at groovetickets.com.
