Now and Zen: Buddha watches over the dance floor at 940 Lincoln St.
Early in the evening, the nightclub Zen (940 Lincoln St.) could be mistaken for a quiet, upscale bar in Cherry Creek. Black tables and banquettes are offset by red fabrics and flickering candles, and the hip, older crowd chats above down-tempo electronica.
Around 11 p.m., though, the mood shifts. A huge screen at one end of the room, used to project soothing visuals, suddenly begins to rise. The few people dancing slow down and a stage is revealed: A DJ spins behind a small, mobile booth while a giant Buddha watches over the proceedings. Candles surround the Buddha, wax dripping down the sides of his pedestal.
“That’s how we say to people, ‘Now it’s time to party,’” says Zen co-owner Kostas Kouremenos.
