Eat Local: Studio 6 Coffee House

Even if you’re not an artist or a caff-fiend, Studio 6 Coffee House inside the 910Arts space on Santa Fe Drive will make you feel like part of the gang.

The tiny sandwich shop helmed by chef and artist Michael Keen serves wraps, salads and sandwiches, along with local tea and personalized lattes. (Keen will sketch out your likeness in latte foam. Seriously. See mine at blogs.denverpost.com/thefoodsection.)

There’s plenty of art on the orange walls, but “the beauty is in the sandwich,” says Keen. “You have to layer the flavors and textures. The sandwich is a fine art,” he says as he stacks roasted turkey and provolone atop spring greens and pesto on sourdough bread. The whole thing goes into a flat press that cooks the greens into the bread. “It’s all inward convection amazingness,” says Keen.

The banter is as cheerful as the sunny, bright yellow atrium in the center of this collective of 18 studios and galleries. Visitors can wander through the warren of workspaces and chat with the artists as they paint, sculpt and draw.

The largest space is eventgallery 910Arts, which is hosting the food-themed show “Eat Here Now!” through May 30. From whimsical to thought-provoking — Ryan Rice’s visual puns (“Apple Pi”), Lynn Farquhar’s apron manifesto and Nikki Pike’s “Gardens in Roam” interactive plant sculpture — the show offers plenty to chew on.

The gallery hosts a “Grow Local” celebration Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. with vegetarian cooking teacher Vicki Johnston, “Colorado Organic” author Jennifer Olson, filmmakers Army Armstrong and Cec Girz, and sampling of local foods (more information at 910arts.com.).

Come for the art, stay for a latte, Or come for the sandwiches, and stay for the art. Either way, your soul will be fed.
