Go & Do: School of Rock’s “Kidstock”

Posted on August.28.2009

School of Rock’s Kidstock is both a history lesson for the students lesson and a live concert of its greatest hits.

The Paul Green School of Rock, one of Denver’s finest purveyors of kiddie rock instruction, is coming at us with another worthy event this weekend. Adding their own twist to the recent spate of Woodstock 40th anniversary events, the School of Rock presents Kidstock, a pair of performances this Sunday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Soiled Dove Underground.

Think of it as the family-friendly alternative to watching people dance, smoke and pass out in the rain. “Whether it’s Woodstock or another type of festival or group, it’s something we can share with the kids and use it as a learning opportunity for them,” said Jessica Soucy, co-manager of the Denver school.

Nightlife: The Living Room comes to SoCo

It’s called the Enomatic. And yes, it’s awesome. Photo courtesy of The Living Room.

Just south of downtown, beer practically flows in the streets. The neighborhood south of Colfax Avenue could be called the Golden Triangle, or “SoCo” if you’re at a nightclub operated by local maven Regas Christou, or maybe Western Capitol Hill. Whatever it is, suds and suds-drinkers abound. From neighborhood bars to booming nighclubs, there’s a place to tipple for every taste.

Well, almost: It’s not the first place to poke around for a relaxing glass of wine. Fortunately, that’s changing. Club owner and neighborhood stalwart Christou is trying to temper the area’s hard-partying character with The Living Room (1055 Broadway), a laid-back wine bar in the heart of the madness, opening Friday night.

Christou has two party places on the same block as The Living Room, Vinyl and Bar Standard, but he’s hoping the new joint will work with City Hall (1144 Broadway), another of his recent additions, to bring in an older, chiller crowd.

Eat Local: Suh Asian Fusion Restaurant

Posted on August.25.2009

suh
Experience the world of sushi and a whole lot more at Suh Asian Fusion Restaurant in Fort Collins.

If SungWon Suh and his wife, JiYoun Rhee, play their laminated menu cards right, “Suh” will be more than a family name. It will be a brand name.

After culinary and business school, the couple moved from South Korea to northern Colorado and worked with Suh’s brother, who owns Sushi 1 in Greeley. They opened Suh last September in central Fort Collins and hope to expand toward Denver.

Suh makes the most of its location in a modest strip next to the railroad tracks that run through town. Reflecting the owners’ youth, the restaurant’s red, black and white interior feels modern but not too sleek. Red floral wallpaper frames the sushi counter with its four stools opposite the entrance, while a silvery brick pattern offers a calm contrast in the dining area.

Bars and Nightlife: Globeville’s White Owl

Posted on August.21.2009

globeville
Shiny new townhomes in Globeville prove that the North Denver Superfund site is rapidly changing — and the White Owl wants to be on the cutting edge of that.

When news broke in July that the Superfund project in Denver’s Globeville neighborhood was nearing completion, a lot of questions must have surfaced. Questions like, “Where’s Globeville?”

For those not in the know, Globeville is a little neighborhood near the meeting point of Interstates 25 and 70. Look down next time you’re at the intersection — you might be able to see some of the neighborhood’s modest houses in the shadow of the interstates.

A home to the area’s industrial workers when factories ruled the area, it’s a rather quiet hamlet now, easily reachable but somehow cut off from the rest of downtown.

Eat Local: The Corner Office

Posted on August.20.2009

Swinging ’60s singles? Not exactly, but the decor at the Corner Office hits the vibe perfectly.

Here’s one way to celebrate Season Three of the hit television show “Mad Men” on AMC: Visit the Corner Office restaurant in the Curtis Hotel in downtown Denver.

Sit at the bar, and order a martini. Take a deep breath, relax, and look around. The bar stools, the walls, the chairs, the tables — all of it seems of a piece with the television show, which is set in a New York advertising agency in the early 1960s: Men wearing trim suits with skinny lapels. Women with candy-apple red lipstick wearing dresses and tiny cardigan sweaters. Cigarettes.

You, the “Mad Men” freak, can find the suits, the lapels, the lipstick, the dresses and the sweaters in the Corner Office (but you can forget about the smokes). Either way, you will feel all “Mad Men”-ish as you sit there and sip. That’s the idea behind the restaurant design, at least.
