Author Q&A: Amy Goodman

Posted on November.27.2009

Amy Goodman: prolific writer, crusader for justice and… Flobots fan?

Internationally-respected journalist, radio/TV host and author Amy Goodman has routinely put her life and reputation on the line for the cause of justice, but even something as innocuous as a book tour (for her latest, “Breaking the Sound Barrier”) is apparently threatening to some people.

Just yesterday, Goodman was reportedly detained and questioned at the Canadian border for over an hour in advance of an author event in Vancouver — which in turn delayed our little e-mail interview with her.

Fortunately, Goodman was able to answer the questions we had for her today about her Boulder appearance on Saturday, the state of the political union (or disunion, as it were) and what keeps her occupied and entertained on the road.

Nightlife: Post-turkey DJs and dancing

Posted on November.25.2009

French houses DJ David Guetta, who plays Beta on Dec. 3, isn’t shy about his prowess behind the turntables.

It’s finally here. That holly-jolly time of year that feels like a month-long party. There’s the office holiday party. Next is the boyfriend’s work party. A friend is having an “ugly Christmas sweater” party. Maybe someone else wants to have a Secret Santa gift exchange, or perhaps a Hanukkah celebration is in the works.

By New Year’s Eve, partying has almost become a way of life. On New Year’s Day the hangover truly begins, so it’s time to make the most of the weeks ahead. Turkey Day may have been brutal, but friends and family are in town. Many are looking to start the holidays right, so put on some loose-fitting clothing and roll off the couch. Employ wheelbarrows if necessary.

On Friday, amble over to Tambien (250 Steele St.). It’s “The Lighting of Tambien,” the restaurant’s excuse to get everyone “lit” in the spirit of the holidays.

Dance Q&A: “Lord of the Dance’s” Jason Gorman

Posted on November.19.2009

Jason Gorman gets legally — and literally — high in “Lord of the Dance.”

It seems that nearly everywhere you look these days, Michael Flatley’s disturbingly nimble Irish step moves are flooding an area stage. Best know for his massive hit “Riverdance” (which, incidentally, premieres at the Buell Theatre on Tuesday), Flatley’s also responsible for such aptly-named productions as “Lord of the Dance” and “Feet of Flames.”

The former has been touring the world for nearly 14 years to over 100 million people in 65 countries, and it’s stopping by the Budweiser Events Center on Friday, Nov. 20, for a performance.

As you can probably imagine, these shows don’t accept just anyone. Hardcore, lifelong dancers clamor for these physically exhausting, technically challenging roles, which combine Irish dance, tap and other forms.

We spoke with “Lord of the Dance’s” lead dancer Jason Gorman via e-mail in advance of the show about the rigors of the role, how someone gets a gig like this in the first place (hint: audition, audition, audition) and why he thinks audiences keep coming back for more.

Nightlife: LoHi Steak Bar

Posted on November.19.2009

At LoHi steak bar it’s all about stylish comfort and warmth — and steak, of course.

It’s beginning to look a lot like winter. That’s good news for all the season-pass-holding skiers and riders out there. For the more casual snow bunny, it’s the start of a long, agonizing journey to next summer.

Winter sports are fun, no doubt, but not everyone has the cash or the schedule to trek into the hills each weekend. That means there will be some lonely, directionless nights to come over the next few months — nights that call for holing up at a bar and not coming out until bedtime.

For those times, LoHi Steakbar (3200 Tejon St.) is going to be a hit. The place opened in June but the lengthy drink menu and selection of meaty delights seems tailor-made for wintertime hunkering down.

Drink Local: Tipsy’s Liquor World

Posted on November.17.2009

tipsys
In a booze-loving town like Denver, Tipsy’s is a welcome sight.

If Epcot had a Liquorland installation, it would look like Tipsy’s Liquor World. Strolling through the massive store in southern Jefferson County (at the intersection of C-470 and West Bowles Avenue), is at turns intimidating and exhilarating — the sprawling displays offer a bewildering bounty.

Novices are easy to spot at Tipsy’s, as they stand in the middle of the store, overwhelmed at the selection — or when they try to engage one of the mannequin figures that populate the sprawling sales floor. Getting your bearings isn’t easy (you start to wonder if you’ll need a GPS to find the Sauternes), but talking to the (live) staffers is; they’re knowledgeable and helpful and know where things are.
