Nightlife: Go ahead, embrace your inner Snuggie

Posted on March.25.2010

“Hey, Susie, wanna go to LoDo with grammy and do some shots of Jager?”

Spring is strange. The weather is unpredictable, but leans toward unpleasantness. In winter, the weather is predictably bad. Once spring hits, there’s no way to find a groove. Bar patios are open one minute, closed the next. Irish coffee is the drink of choice on Friday night, but Saturday sunshine has everyone craving chilled white wine. An insane snowstorm one night has the city preparing to spend the weekend at home under blankets; by Friday, temperatures are in the 60s.

Clothing choices are all over the place, of course. How fortunate we are, then, to have the Snuggie, The Blanket With Sleeves. It’s a fine garment for spring, with long-sleeved warmth in the front and an adjustable opening at the back for ventilation. And it is certainly as weird-looking as spring weather patterns.

If spring is Snuggie season, now is the perfect time for the second annual Snuggie Pub Crawl. An intrepid group of Snuggie enthusiasts are once again hitting LoDo, fully prepared to be mocked in their monklike robes.

Eat Local: Denver Biscuit Co.

Posted on March.22.2010

Chowing down at the Denver Biscuit Co., in East Colfax’s Atomic Cowboy bar, is a rich, filling experience.

The morning is frigid, but fear not: You are digging into a hot, crispy biscuit smothered with homemade sausage gravy while jump blues wafts from the speakers — all under the watchful eye of a bison head mounted on the worn brick wall.

Breakfast doesn’t get more all-American than this. The Denver Biscuit Co. opened in early December, sharing space in the Atomic Cowboy on East Colfax Avenue, just west of the Bluebird Theater.

With a menu that’s short but sweet, the restaurant recently expanded its breakfast and lunch service from weekends to a daily concern. “The crowds had gotten pretty crazy, and we thought the timing was right,” says proprietor Drew Shader, who also operates Fat Sullys pizzeria inside the Atomic.

Nightlife: St. Patrick’s Day starts early

Posted on March.12.2010

Yes, “Shamrockin” is a truly terrifying concept, but Denver’s actual St. Patrick’s Day parade promises to be loads of fun.

St. Patrick’s Day may be on a weekday, but that’s no excuse to take it easy. Instead, nearly everyone is moving the partying to this weekend. With Denver’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade coursing through LoDo on Saturday morning, downtown Denver is going to be soaked in green beer and filled with goofy smiles.

Navigating the sea of green could be rough: Some bars are charging covers — that means spending extra bucks to warm a bar stool. On the other hand, the cover-chargers often offer nice incentives, like live music and drink specials.

Whatever your St. Pat’s budget, there’s a party that will fit. It’s the day when everyone is Irish, right? Throw on some green, dot a few freckles if necessary and get out there.

Nightlife: Oscar parties glam up Denver

Posted on March.4.2010

No, you can’t have one, but you catch watch other undeserving people get them whilst drinking!

For movie buffs and celebrity watchers it might as well be Super Bowl Sunday: the Academy Awards. Oscar parties will be springing up over the next couple of days. It’s a fine tradition: Gather at a friend’s house, maybe get gussied up, talk trash about the super-rich and glamorous movie stars on TV.

Even casual film fans can get in on the fun, especially if there’s some friendly wagering involved. Sometimes, however, it’s fun to break from tradition and get out of the house-party circuit. If so, there are ways to take the Oscar party on the road and live it up, Hollywood-style.

Eat Local: Di’s Cafe

Posted on March.3.2010

Tucked among the showrooms of the Denver Design District, Di’s Cafe caters mostly to designers and their clients, but like the center itself, the restaurant is open to the public.

Owner Di Glotfelty (she pronounces her first name D.I.) runs the breakfast/lunch spot with cheerful sass, teasing the customers who order at her little counter. She rewards their goodwill with homemade soups, fresh salads and wraps, and expertly seasoned daily specials — delivered tableside.
