Eat Local: Di’s Cafe
by Kristen Browning-Blas on March 3, 2010

Tucked among the showrooms of the Denver Design District, Di’s Cafe caters mostly to designers and their clients, but like the center itself, the restaurant is open to the public.

Owner Di Glotfelty (she pronounces her first name D.I.) runs the breakfast/lunch spot with cheerful sass, teasing the customers who order at her little counter. She rewards their goodwill with homemade soups, fresh salads and wraps, and expertly seasoned daily specials — delivered tableside.

A native of Palau, Glotfelty (pictured below) and her husband bought the space a year ago and decorated it with conch shells and wood carvings, but they have yet to add any Micronesian dishes to the menu. Her offerings are not bland, though — Glotfelty has a gift for flavor. An orange-vanilla sauce melds with the mandarin oranges in the smoked salmon wrap. Ancho-chipotle sauce livens up the turkey-avocado. The salads are bright but not overpowered with vinaigrette.

The design district offers a free designer referral service to guide customers through its retail and to-the-trade showrooms. Check in at the main desk, and they will assign you a designer for a tour. Get your mouth watering over the high-end furniture, fabrics, lighting, tile and rugs, then have lunch at Di’s.
